In seinem sehr eindringlich erzählten Erinnerungsbuch versucht der bekannte Rechtswissenschaftler und Staatsrechtler Karl Doehring deshalb noch einmal, die dramatischen Umbrüche des 20. Jahrhunderts jenseits der verbreiteten Klischees aus der Sicht des Zeitgenossen zu schildern. Geboren in den Wirren der Revolution von 1919, erlebt der aus gutbürgerlichem, deutsch-nationalem Elternhaus stammende Doehring das Ende der Weimarer Republik und die Machtergreifung aus nächster Nähe: Im Januar 1933 wird er Augenzeuge des Fackelzuges durch das Brandenburger Tor und wenig später sieht er vom Dach des väterlichen Hauses den Reichstag brennen. Widerstrebend versuchen Freunde und Bekannte, sich mit dem neuen Regime zu arrangieren. Doch schon bald geht die anfängliche Aufbruchstimmung in Ernüchterung und Ablehnung über. Auch die Familie Doehring ist betroffen: Nach dem Röhmputsch wird der Vater vorübergehend im KZ interniert und geht schließlich in die Illegalität; der Bruder will jüdischen Mitschülern gefälschte Wehrpässe besorgen und kann sich nur durch Flucht in die Schweiz retten. Karl Doehring hingegen nimmt als Soldat am Überfall auf Polen und am Afrika-Feldzug unter Rommel teil, wo er 1943 in Gefangenschaft gerät. Zurückgekehrt nach Heidelberg, beginnt er das Studium an der juristischen Fakultät, wird Ordinarius und Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut und erlebt schließlich die beiden großen Zäsuren der Nachkriegszeit die Studentenunruhen der Achtundsechziger, deren Auftritte ihn mitunter an die studentische SA erinnerten, und die Dramatik der Wiedervereinigung, die niemand vorhergesehen und kaum jemand erhofft hatte.
