Donald H. Wallace (späterer Spitzenökonom der US-Regierung) lieferte mit diesem fast 600-seitigen Wälzer eine brisante Analyse des internationalen Aluminiummarktes. Im Zentrum steht das nahezu lückenlose Monopol des US-Giganten Alcoa sowie dessen Verflechtungen mit dem Internationalen Aluminium-Kartell (Alliance Aluminium Cie, Basel) in Europa. Wallace deckte die geheimen Preisabsprachen, Förderquoten und Marktaufteilungen auf, mit denen die weltweite Produktion künstlich verknappt und kontrolliert wurde. Für die Metallgesellschaft (MG) war diesHer Harvard-Import im Jahr 1937 von allerhöchster, geradezu strategischer Relevanz: Die MG war im Deutschen Reich der dominierende Akteur im Handel und in der Verarbeitung von Nichteisenmetallen. Gleichzeitig befand sich Deutschland 1937 mitten in der rüstungswirtschaftlichen Autarkiepolitik (Vierjahresplan), die das Land bis 1938 zum weltweit größten Primäraluminium-Produzenten insbesondere für den Bau der Luftwaffe aufstiegen ließ. Da Aluminium für den Flugzeugbau kriegsentscheidend war, nutzten die Vorstände und Chefökonomen der MG das Buch von Wallace als Grundlage zur Marktspionage: Sie analysierten Wallaces Daten über die amerikanischen Produktionskapazitäten, die Bauxit-Lagerstätten und die Machtstrukturen der Alliierten, um die eigene globale Rohstoff- und Handelsstrategie im Vorfeld des herannahenden Konflikts auszurichten. Es dokumentiert perfekt die doppelte Interessenlage der Metallgesellschaft AG: einerseits sammelte sie hochspezialisierte Labor-Handbücher (Horstmann, Kausch, Heermann/Herzog, siehe Katalog), um die rein chemische und technische Spitzenposition ihrer Hütten und Fabriken zu sichern. Andererseits agierte die MG als globaler Machtaktteilnehmer, der sich direkt aus den USA wissenschaftliche Analysen wie die von Wallace beschaffte, um die globalen Monopole und die Rohstoffströme der Konkurrenz im Detail zu verstehen. Dass dieses Buch 1937 in Boston gedruckt wurde und trotz der Zensur und der Devisenknappheit noch im selben Jahr den Weg in die Frankfurter Konzernzentrale fand, unterstreicht die Sonderstellung dieser Bibliothek. Die das wissenschaftliche Auge' eines Konzerns war, der gleichzeitig von personellen Zwangswechseln in Unruhe war: bis Anfang 1938 hatte Richard Merton (1881-1960), der Sohn des Firmengründers Wilhelm Merton, noch als Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender maßgeblichen Einfluss im Konzern. Doch im Jahr 1938 erreichte der Terror gegen jüdische Bürger seinen vorläufigen Höhepunkt. Im Zuge der Reichspogromnacht im November 1938 wurde Richard Merton verhaftet und in das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald verschleppt. Nur durch massiven internationalen Druck und die Hilfe von Freunden (zu denen paradoxerweise auch sein nationalsozialistisch protegierter Nachfolger Alfred Petersen gehörte) kam Merton frei und konnte 1939 nach England emigrieren. Ab 1939 war Alfred Petersen (1885 - 1960) als Vorsitzender des Vorstandes der entscheidende Mann im operativen Tagesgeschäft. Er war als Nachkomme einer traditionsreichen Frankfurter Kaufmannsfamilie bereits seit den 1920er Jahren Mitglied im Vorstand der MG. Petersen war im NA-System opportunistischer Mitläufer, im Unternehmen gelernter Pragmatiker. Unter seiner Führung passte sich die MG radikal an die rüstungswirtschaftlichen Vorgaben des NS-Regimes an. Er sorgte dafür, dass die MG trotz der politischen Repressionen im Inneren voll funktionsfähig blieb und zu einem der wichtigsten Zulieferer für den Vierjahresplan (Rüstung und Autarkie) wurde. Dies war auch Teil seiner kritisch beäugten Anpassungsstrategie. Er hatte im Unternehmen an prominenten Stellen zwei Aufpasser: Hermann Schlosser (1889 - 1979) und Wilhelm Avieny (1897 - 1983). Schlosser hatte bereits 1934 bei der NSDAP einen Aufnahmeantrag gestellt, wurde aber als abgeschworener Freimaurer erst 1939 aufgenommen. Er war Vorstandsvorsitzender der Degussa, die in der MG nach der staatlich erzwungenen Übernahme der Aktienanteile der Familie Merton maßgeblichen Einfluß hatte. Vor allem aber Wilhelm Avieny, der als eingefleischter Nationalsozialist und SS-Obersturmbannführer 1939 in dem Vorstand der Metallgesellschaft plaziert wurde und gleichzeitg - ab Kriegsbeginn - 1939 als erster Leiter des Durchgangslagers der Luftwaffe in Oberursel plaziert wurde. Am Rande: dieses Duo war dann später auch maßgeblich bei der Beteiligung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Schädlingsbekämpfung m.b.H' (kurz Degesch) an den Lieferungen des modifizierten Zyklon B (ohne Warn- und Reizstoff) an die SS und die Konzentrationslager.
