hardcover. Condizione: Good. Publication: London, Sandle Brothers Limited, 1946 Formatting: 16mo, pp. [32]. Condition Report: Good. The pictorial paper-covered boards remain bright and visually striking, though they exhibit the typical handling wear expected of a vintage children's book of this fragile nature. There is noticeable rubbing and chipping to the extremities, particularly at the spine ends and corners, where the underlying boards are exposed. The delicate paper spine covering shows some wear and minor losses along the joints, yet the binding remains fundamentally secure and reasonably tight. Internally, the pages present a few instances of light, age-related spotting and minor handling marks, but the vibrant colour illustrations remain completely unaffected and the text block is fully intact, justifying a solid grade for a surviving children's title from this era. Catalogue Note: This first edition is vividly brought to life by Patricia Carey, whose charming, full-colour plates perfectly capture the gentle whimsy of mid-century British children's literature. Her illustrations provide a delightful visual counterpart to the anthropomorphic adventures within, rendered in a classic post-war style. Small-format children's books from this period, particularly those bound in such delicate paper-covered boards, were heavily handled and rarely survive in completely intact condition. Finding a copy that has avoided severe structural damage or heavy childlike scribbles is increasingly difficult. Consequently, copies of this specific title are scarce on the open market. It presents an appealing acquisition for collectors of vintage nursery literature and those interested in the post-war output of smaller British publishing houses. Cubbinâs Boat follows the charming riverside adventures of Cubbin, an endearing stitched soft toy, and his two helpful rabbit friends, including the steadfast Betsy Brindle. Living in Old Hollow, a cosy home fashioned from a willow tree at the foot of Greentop Hill, Cubbin sets out on a gentle aquatic journey in a small, homemade boat. Rich with whimsical charm, this delightful tale captures the innocence of idyllic woodland life and the simple joys of exploring the riverbank with loyal friends. Patricia Carey (illustratore).
