Douglass. Red cloth hardcover boards with gilt design on the front cover; gilt lettering and gilt page edges. The Author's first and important treatise on the early explorations of Mars. Boards with moderate wear and heavy soiling; spine edges frayed; hinges cracked and pages dusty. Percival Lawrence Lowell (1855-1916) was a businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars, founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death. He was particularly interested in the canals of Mars, as drawn by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who was director of the Milan Observatory. In 1894 Lowell chose Flagstaff, Arizona Territory as the home of his new observatory. For the next fifteen years he studied Mars extensively, and made intricate drawings of the surface markings as he perceived them. Lowell published his views in three books: Mars (1895), Mars and Its Canals (1906), and Mars As the Abode of Life (1908). With these writings, Lowell more than anyone else popularized the long-held belief that these markings showed that Mars sustained intelligent life forms. His works include a detailed description of what he termed the 'non-natural features' of the planet's surface, including especially a full account of the 'canals,' single and double; the 'oases,' as he termed the dark spots at their intersections; and the varying visibility of both, depending partly on the Martian seasons. He theorized that an advanced but desperate culture had built the canals to tap Mars' polar ice caps, the last source of water on an inexorably drying planet. While this idea excited the public, the astronomical community was skeptical. Many astronomers could not see these markings, and few believed that they were as extensive as Lowell claimed. W. H. The subscribers, Frederick Douglass plus fifty-four African-American leaders from Philadelphia, include ministers, merchants, teachers, a dentist, artists, a bookdealer, a shoemaker, a barber, a confectioner, and a restaurant-owner. 1 p., 30 x 42 in., framed to 35 1/2 x 48 in. Washington Conservation Studio 2017 report available on request. This very rare and dramatic recruiting poster signals a seismic shift in policy. African American men had joined Union forces in limited numbers from the start of the Civil War, but it took Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, to officially encourage and remove barriers to their enlistment.After Massachusetts Governor John Andrew had federal permission to raise a corps of "United States Colored Troops," Frederick Douglass spent much of the spring recruiting for the 54th Regiment. His own sons Charles and Lewis were among those who heeded the call. At Secretary of War Stanton's request, Douglass traveled through the Union, with his rousing pleas printed in newspapers and broadsides across the North. In June 1863, this effort took on a new urgency as the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia started to move north into Pennsylvania. On June 23, 1863, the War Department authorized three black regiments to be raised in the Philadelphia area. Recruitment posters of all sorts and sizes were soon posted throughout Philadelphia.[1] Major George L. Stearns, chief of the government's recruiting drive, invited Frederick Douglass to speak.
