[ff. 42]. 40 plates. title in red & black. contemporary half roan, all edges gilt (extremities rubbed, some foxing generally light, Plate 39 misbound, several tears mostly to margins - some with old repairs). First Edition. "During 1849 he[Doyle] contributed to 'Punch' one of his best works, the Manners and Customs., a series of designs in conventional outline, cleverly annotated by Percival Leigh under the guise of 'Mr. Pips'.In these pages, often closely crowded with minute figures, and admirable in their archly exaggerated drollery, we seem to live again in the England of Lablache and Jenny Lind, of Julien's concerts and Richardson's show, of 'Sam Hall' and the Cider Cellers, of cricketeers in stove-pipe hats, and a hundred things which have gone the way of 'last year's snows'. (DNB) The English customs and manners featured here include dancing and polka, strolling in Hyde Park, railway shareholders' meeting, Criminal Court proceedings, Regent Street at four o'clock, deer stalking in the Highlands, wine tasting, horse-racing at Epsom Downs, the Thames regatta race, &c. …

Some gold flaking off spines and a little light shelf wear and rubbing. An occasional chip or spot. One tissue guard remaining. Newer endpapers. "The Newcomes" may not be as well known as Thackeray's major work, "Vanity Fair," but solidifies his reputation as a master satirist. The family at first appear to be a respectable group of merchants and bankers, but their respectability is primarily about appearances as the novel explores family jealousies, rivalries and downright nastiness. A major theme is the injustice shown women in the Victorian marriage market.…

But you are mistaken if you think you read [William Makepeace] Thackeray's book then; you read a lesser book of your own. It should be read again when you are thirty-six, which is the age of Thackeray when he wrote it. It should be read for the third time when you are fifty-six, sixty-six, seventy-six, in order to see how Thackeray's irony stands up to your own experience of life. Perhaps you will not read every page in these later years, but you really should take another look at a great book, in order to find out how great it is, or how great it has remained, to you."
