Aggiungi al carrelloFull Leather. Condizione: Very Good. New Edition. A FATHER'S LEGACY TO HIS DAUGHTERS Dr John Gregory. Printed for T Cadell and W Davies. by Wood & Innes, London 1808 New Edition 142pp Hardback. London - Printed for T Cadell & W Davies by Wood & Innes, London.Doctor John Gregory's work on the principles of female education, which provoked a strong reaction from his contemporary, Mary Wollstonecraft. Bound in leather with ornate gilt banding and detail. An early 19th century original binding. Ornate marbelling to paste downs and endpapers with matching marbellings to page edges all round. John Gregory (1724 1773) was an eighteenth-century Scottish physician, medical writer and moralist. In what would become his most famous publication, Gregory wrote Father's Legacy to his Daughters (1761) after the death of his wife in 1761 in order to honour her memory and record her thoughts on female education. Originally Gregory meant only to give the text to his daughters when he died, but his son James published it in 1774; it became a bestseller, going through many editions and translations. In writing this work, he may have been influenced by the celebrated Bluestocking Elizabeth Montagu. The text advises parents and women on religion, moral conduct, friendship and interactions with men, with a focus on marriage. He suggested that women refrain from exposing any learning that they might have, as this would damage their ability to attract a husband. Mary Wollstonecraft would later viciously attack these principles in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), arguing that Gregory's advice amounted to nothing more than deceit on the part of women. The full leather covers to this copy show considerable sigs of wear, the front board is almost detatched however apart from a neat copper plate inscription with a contemporary date the stock is unmarked and both tight and bright. Ref L5.

Full-Leather. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Title: Parental Legacies, Consisting of Advice from a Lady of Quality to Her Children and A Father's Legacy to His Daughters, Also a Number of Interesting and Valuable Extracts. Author: Lady Mary Walker and Dr. John Gregory Publisher: Printed and Sold by Ambrose Walker, New Brunswick, NJ (1808) A Rare 1808 New Jersey Imprint: The Ambrose Walker "Parental Legacies" Secure a fascinating piece of early American printing history with this 1808 first edition compilation by Ambrose Walker. A remarkably scarce New Brunswick imprint, this volume brings together two of the 18th century's most influential "conduct books": Lady Mary Walker's Letters from a Lady of Quality and Dr. John Gregory's classic A Father's Legacy to His Daughters. Bibliographic Significance & Points of Issue: The Printer: New Jersey historian Joseph Felcone notes that Ambrose Walker operated in New Brunswick for only three years (1808-1809) before relocating to Philadelphia. This makes his New Brunswick imprints highly sought after by regional collectors. A Rare State: While the OCLC record for this imprint notes common pagination errors (p. 81 numbered as 8; p. 375 as 735), this specific copy features the correct pagination for page 81, marking it as a distinct and well-executed state of the printing. Condition & Features: Binding: Original full-leather period binding. The leather shows honest wear, particularly along the edges and at the head and tail of the spine, lending it a genuine antiquarian character. Internal State: The text block is tight and secure. The pages are clean with only minor foxing, preserving the crispness of the early 19th-century typography. Format: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A premier addition for collectors of early New Jerseyana, conduct literature, or federal-era American imprints. [Store Location: 1.4].
