Measures 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" x 1". Scuffing and wear to binding but reasonably clean. Rubbing at edges and on hinges and chipping to paper. Bumped and torn corners. Binding reasonably firm. Page edges contain some scuffing and marking, and a degree of fading to marbling pattern. Inscription to free endpaper prior to Goldsmith work and signature to endpaper prior to Johnson. Some page corners dog-eared. Top edge of page 65 of Hamond and Hervey has had the top piece cut off. Some foxing, staining and other marking throughout, with a little ink blotching to initial front endpapers of book, but no underlining, marginalia, etc. 70, 65, 110, 64, 94 pp. 1806-8.

The boards are framed within a lovely gilt roll and triple fillets. All edges gilt. Illustrated with fine engraved vignettes throughout. A neat ink inscription… on the reverse of the free end paper and a previous owner's name on the title page. The half title has been torn out. Slightly grubby but still a charming volume.

A beautiful Special Limited edition/ first printing in Fine condition, being # 1436 of only 1500 made for the members of The Limited editions Club in 1935. Printed on French-folded sheets. Decorative cloth, red morocco shelfback (BAL #3555) Illustrations are ve…ry bright, pages show only very little browning. While the original navy cloth slipcover shows considerable wear and tear with bumped corners and spine pulling away from boards, the book itself is exceptionally collectible and scarce in this condition; In the foreword of this limited edition, Twain's daughter Clara explains the circumstances under which her father decided to translate into English the classic German children's book Der Struwwelpeter. Twain was intrigued by the jingles and illustrations about unruly children penned by general practitioner Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann and decided to very loosely "Americanize" the antics of the thumbsucking boy and the match playing little girl. Both Dr. Hoffmann and Twain recognized the dark side of childhood that only another child, whether German or American, can recognize. Basis for Off-Broadway play titled "Shock Headed Peter" in 2003; 4to. Illustrated by Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann (illustratore).
