From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Source handwritten on first page, otherwise clean. - From the text: The Polish-Dutch Mission excavating at Palmyra in the middle of the Syrian desert, discovered during its 1975-77 campaign, the sanctuary of the Arab goddess Allat, situated in the western quarter of the city known as Diocletian's Camp. The sanctuary consists of a walled sacred area with porticoes, in the center of which the temple proper stands. One enters the sacred area, the temenos, from the east side through a monumental gate, in front of which there are six columns. To the north of these propylaea stands an honorific column. A Palmyrene inscription on the lintel of the monumental gate mentioned the goddess' name; on the honorific column, a bilingual inscription in Greek and Palmyrene, as Athena and Allat, respectively, repeats her name and also gives the date of a.d. 64. During the excavations, we reconstructed the propylaea as well as the honorific column which had fallen down so that its drums lay scattered all around. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Het militair-bestuur-lijke complex, dat bekend staat als Kamp van Diocletianus werd gebouwd omstreeks 300 A.D. tijdens de heerschappij van Diocletianus en de andere tetrarchen, die als een militaire junta het Romeinse Imperium bestuurden en Palmyra tot een vesting, een castra maakten in hun verdedigingslinie tegen de traditionele vijanden uit het Oosten, de Perzen. Beide archi-tectonische complexen worden verbonden door brede kolon-nades, welker bouw meer dan twee eeuwen in beslag nam en gedurende de hele bloeiperiode van Palmyra doorging. Seite, sonst ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Aus dem Text: Der westliche Stadtteil von Palmyra (Abb. 1 u. 2) wird gewöhnlich als das «Diokletianslager» bezeichnet, eine Ansicht, die auf der schon im 18. Jahrhundert von Halifax und Wood aufgefundenen Gründungsinschrift im sog. Fahnenheiligtum dieses Lagers basiert. Die bekannte Inschrift hat folgenden Wortlaut: [Reparato]res orbis sui et propagatores generis humani DD.NN. Diocletianus [et Maximianus] / [invic-tis]simi impp. et Constantius et Maximinianus nobb. Caess. castra feliciter condiderunt / [caram agejnte Sossiano Hieroclete v(iro) p(erfectissiipo) praes(ide) provinciae d(evoto) n(umini) m(aiestati) q(ue) eorum; daraus geht hervor, daß Sossianus Heriocles dieses Lager (castra) zwischen 293 und 303 n.Chr. erbaute, als er Statthalter dieser Provinz war.
