Prior owner's engraved pictorial bookplate to front pastedown. Laid in at front are two different sized and designed programs from the same two week run Oct 16-28, 1922 at the Philadelphia Metroploitan Opera House. Both programs light worn, include cast, synopsis, details and photos along with local ads. Book is illustrated with tissue guarded color plates from art by Foster and with musical notation and drawings. This 16th century morality play is introduced (two pages) by poet and dramatist, John Drinkwater. Glassine wrappers with elegantly designed and coloured (cadmium yellow and turquoise) artwork by J. M. King. These covers are intact with the slighting bending at the corners, very minor chipping but some tanning - see main image. The booklet retains its tight binding. Pages have a little creasing in the bottom right-hand corner and some clear but discreet pencil notes in places. NB. there is a printed publisher's message pasted in at the bottom of the title page - see image. pp. v, 39. 100 x 150 mm. 18 mo. Finally, the listed publication date is derived from the date of the artwork on the front cover by J. M. King i.e there is no date reference in the book. The twenty-second impression of this work, published in April 1928. In a half morocco signed binding, signed 'Scrollover N.Y.'. First published in 1918, this play is about the 16th President of the United States, and was Drinkwater's first great success. The play covers events in Lincoln's Presidency from his election in 1860 to his assassination, but omits most of the events in his private life. Former owner's inscription to a front blank.
