First edition. A first edition of an important early modern work on natural philosophy and physics by Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel (1624â"1706), theologian, scientist, and the first secretary of the Acadà mie Royale des Sciences in Paris. Du Hamelâs De Corporum Affectionibus explores the properties of matter and physical phenomena bot…h âmanifestâ (observable) and âoccultâ (hidden), seeking to reconcile Aristotelian and Cartesian science through empirical observation. Divided into two books, the treatise investigates the qualities, forces, and movements of bodies, heat and cold, condensation, magnetism, and other phenomena then considered mysterious. It exemplifies the transitional period between scholastic natural philosophy and the emerging experimental method of the Scientific Revolution. The work was dedicated to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, chief minister to Louis XIV, whose patronage was crucial in establishing Franceâs early scientific institutions. Du Hamel, as both theologian and experimentalist, sought to harmonize faith and reason, arguing that the investigation of natural causes illuminated divine order. This edition, printed by Michaël le Petit and Estienne Michallet, features ornamental woodcut headpieces and initials typical of Parisian imprints of the 1670s. Its blend of scholastic structure and empirical language makes it a foundational text in 17th-century French natural philosophy and an early expression of the experimental ideals promoted by the Acadà mie des Sciences. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in contemporary full mottled calf, spine with raised bands and gilt floral tooling, remnants of gilt title (âDU HAMEL / DE CORP.â) visible in compartments. Boards worn and scuffed, corners rounded, spine ends chipped, and some separation beginning at joints though binding remains secure. Endpapers toned and foxed, text block generally clean with only light scattered foxing and toning consistent with age. Some early ink inscriptions on front free endpaper (âPour Monsieur de Sombroy Hotmanâ¦â), possibly indicating an early presentation or ownership by a French academic contemporary of Du Hamel. Overall- good.

Couverture rigide. Condizione: Assez bon.
