Written as a companion piece to his 1996 National Book Critics Circle Award finalist The Last Happy Occasion, the narrative weaves together a complex family history Beth was a radical student activist who helped co-found Students for a Democratic Society at Michigan State University, and had been temporarily disowned by her family for marrying her African-American husband before a reconciliation that gathered relatives at her bedside. This true first printing is bound in the publisher's original two-tone cloth, with a mustard-yellow spine over orange-tan boards and bright gilt spine lettering.
