Legatura coeva in piena pelle (fessure alle estremità delle cerniere) con dorso a cinque nervi arricchito da titoli e fregi dorati, in quarto cm 23x16, pp (56) 692, ritratto all'antiporta, 4 figure silografiche nel testo e una tavola incisa. Difetti sulla legatura (fessurate le cerneire, sbucciature), antica firma sul frontespizio, complessivamente ben conservato nonostante gli ovvi segni del tempo. Sesta edizione delle opere del medico dalmata, allievo di Malpighi, ?maestro dei clinici italiani? e convinto fautore della preminenza dell'osservazione e della prassi sulla teoria in medicina. Numerose dettagliate descrizioni di malattie e fenomeni naturali, in particolare nei libri del De Praxi Medica e nel trattato De Fibra Motrice et Morbosa (prime due parti del volume) mostrano le teorie meccaniciste e i metodi di fisiologia sperimentale dell'autore, evidenti anche nelle numerose dissertazioni raccolte nella terza parte del volume: De anatome fibrarum, de motu muscolorum et de morbis solidorum; De experimentis circa salivam; ? circa bilem;? circa sanguinem; interessanti poi la relazione dell'autopsia di Marcello Malpighi, i capitoli sul valore terapeutico della musica, dell'esercizio fisico, della caccia e della dieta pitagorica, le lunghe note sul terremoto dell'Aquila del 1703 e il trattato De anatome, morsu & effectibus Tarantulae, con la celebre tavola che raffigura la tarantola e la carta della Puglia. Das interessante 4-seitige Manuskript über die Herstellung von photographischem Papier. - Auguste-Frédéric-Louis Viesse de Marmont, Marschall von Frankreich und Colonel général der chasseurs à cheval, war einer der gebildetsten und tüchtigsten Feldherren des französischen Kaiserreiches. Nach seiner militärischen Laufbahn verlebte er seine letzten Lebensjahre in Wien und Venedig. Marmont ist auch Verfasser mehrer militärischer Werke sowie von bedeutenden Reisebeschreibungen. - Der Empfänger der auf Französisch abgefassten Briefe ist Jacques (Jacob) Mislin (1807-1878). Der aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen stammende Mislin konnte dank seines Onkels an der berühmten Lehranstalt von Porrentruy im Schweizer Kanton Bern studieren, wo er nicht viel später auch selbst unterrichten sollte. Der 1830 zum Priester geweihte kath. Theologe wurde 1836 auf Vermittlung des Grafen von Bombelle an den Wiener Hof berufen, wo er einer der Lehrer der Söhne von Erzherzog Franz Karl und Erzherzogin Sophie wurde und damit sowohl den zukünftigen Kaiser Franz Joseph wie auch Erzherzog Ferdinand Maximilian (später Kaiser Max von Mexiko) unterrichtete (u.a. auch in Erdkunde). Vor der Revolution von 1848 unternahm Mislin eine Pilgerreise von Wien über Budapest und Konstantinopel nach Jersusalem. Der danach erschienene Reisebericht wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt und mehrfach nachgedruckt. In den folgenden Jahren leitete er die Bibliothek am Hof der Herzogin von Parma, Erzherzogin Marie Louise, wurde zum Abt von St. Maria von Deg (Ungarn), geheimer Kämmerer u. Hausprälat Papst Pius' XI., Apostolischer Pronotar, Kanoniker der Kathedrale von Großwardein, Träger zahlr. Orden (u.a. von Spanien, Parma u. des Ritterordens vom Heiligen Grab zu Jerusalem) sowie Mitglied zahlr. Akademien. Der Verfasser zahlr. Publikationen und Vertraute des belgischen Königs und des Grafen von Chambord blieb nach der Rückkehr von seiner Pilgerreise in Wien, wo er weiterhin in persönlichem Kontakt mit dem Kaiserhaus stand. - In einem numerierten, von Mislin eigenh. beschrifteten Papierumschlag. Excellent. Printers crease at lower right. Size 8 x 12 Inches. This is a 1638 Matthias Merian engraving of two city views: Ragusa (Dubrovnik, Croatia) and Negroponte (Chalcis, Greece). Each city is viewed as if from a high point, with its harbor in the foreground. Then, as now, grand medieval walls surround each, but within both church steeples and minarets are apparent, underscoring how each city frequently changed hands in the ongoing wars between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian Republic. Ragusa Medieval Ragusa, now Dubrovnik, was a Venetian territory and a vital link in the spice trade. When the Portuguese established a sea route around Africa to the spice islands, the overland spice trade dried up, but Ragusa was able to maintain influence by carefully balancing the interests of Venice with those of the Ottoman Empire. Their merchant fleet was able to travel freely in the territories of both powers. In 1667, Ragusa suffered a catastrophic earthquake, taking as many as 5,000 lives and flattening most of the structures visible here. Dubrovnik's famous city walls survived the earthquake and thus are more recognizable - both the old medieval walls facing the water and the more modern fortifications facing land. Negroponte The ancient name, literally meaning 'Black Bridge,' refers to the city of Chalcia on the Greek island of Euboea - where it spanned the narrowest gap of the Euripus Strait, separating the island from the mainland. Formerly a Venetian state, since 1470 it had been an Ottoman territory. Its strategic position was such that the Ottomans made the city the 'Seat of the Admiral of the Archipelago.' Publication History and Census This map was executed in 1638 for inclusion in Matthias Merian's Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica , a German translation of Pierre d'Avity's 1616 Les Estats, Empires, et Principautez du Monde .
