From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: The history of the provincial cult at Lugdunum divides into three distinct phases corresponding to significant changes in the character of the worship offered by the Three Gauls. What is of particular interest in the second century A.D. is the way the focus of the cult shifted from the living Augustus to deified personages, then back again to the reigning emperor(s) to fit the changing policies of succeeding regimes. The period thus offers striking testimony to the basic nature of the ruler cult as a political device devoid of true religious content. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on first page, otherwise a good and clean copy. - From the text: Modem scholarship has accepted the convenient date of 27 B. C. for the formation of a unified province of Africa under a proconsular governor. Evidence in support of this communis opinio turns out to be surprisingly slight. Of the two main literary passages usually called in aid that of Dio refers explicitly only to the division of the provinces between princeps and senate Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: None. Volume I in two books. Green wraps with black lettering. 371 numbered pp., 73 plates. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. This volume deals with the institution and evolution of imperial cult at the provincial level from the earliest foundations under Augustus down to the mid-third century A.D. On the basis of detailed examination of evidence from the different regions or provinces of the Latin west the emphasis of provincial cults can be seen to move first from the living emperor and Roma to the deified emperor, then from a composite cult of living and deified dead emperors to a renewed emphasis on the reigning emperor in the late second and early third centuries. Analysis is based primarily on the study of epigraphical, numismatic and iconographic evidence, generously illuminated by plates. The volume concludes with a series of essays summarizing the main lines of development in the light of various related issues.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Somewhat bumped, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: Fate has hardly been unkind to Germaniensjourney to Egypt. His recently published speech to the Alexandrians lends new authority to an already respectable corpus of primary evidence, which can be filled out on minor points with titbits of information in Apion, Pliny the Elder, and Suetonius Tiberius. All the same, our principal source is still Tacitus account in Annals ii, 59-61unfortunately so since it is impossible at this stage to reconstruct the pre-Tacitean tradition of Germanicus in the East or to distinguish properly between the various strands of the hostile and apologetic versions (put out by Agrippina?). We can see things to-day only as the historian himself knowingly represented them. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Reprint, stapled, folded across.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: The cult of the Cereres at the Roman colony of Carthage is now attested by no less than eighteen inscriptions. These tell nothing of the nature of the worship beyond the priestly titles sacerdos Cererum and magister sacrorum Cerealium but are noteworthy in recording a peculiar era of the cult by which the priest dated his year of office; the usual format is sacer. Cerer. c. I. K. ann. . or a variant. Apart from its intrinsic interest, this method of computation is historically significant for the fact that it provided the model for a similar method of dating priesthoods later employed within the provincial cult of Africa Proconsularis. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: The text of the great inscription from Vieux, which the Three Gauls erected to T. Sennius Sollemnis on 16th December A.D. 238, has been the subject of prolonged discussion culminating in the exhaustive commentary by H.-G. Pflaum. The nature and content of the details preserved, so important for the light they throw on the relationship of a provincial council to the Roman administration, are hardly in need of any reappraisal here; Pflaums analysis stands as definitive. My only concern is with the title borne by Sollemnis in his capacity of provincial high priest ca. A.D. 2203. As this happens to be the latest of forty or more such priesthoods that chance to survive4, its precise formula is of crucial interest for the final development of the provincial cult of the Three Gauls.
