Goldsmith drew heavily on the work of earlier naturalists, using Buffon as his main guide, although in fact he had little regard for the elaborate classifications of other scientists. It was his aim ' to excite an interest in the science of natural history by displaying before the public eye its numberless treasures'. This, therefore, is not a scientific work but a highly entertaining account of the habits, subsistence, manners, friendships and hostilities of a wide array of animals, such as the scorpion, the sheep, the cassowary and the sea urchin.
