Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback, stated first edition, in very good, almost as new condition. There is a small bump at the back edge near the corner. Black boards with black quarterbinding/gold gilt lettering on the spine. The dust jacket is in very good shape, looks… like new. Based on never-before-analyzed archival documents, letters, and diaries, as well as oral histories recorded by the authors over fifteen years across Europe and the United States, Holocaust is at once cutting-edge history and a dramatic, magisterial account. The acompanying 75 illustrations affer a graphic narrative, and 16 original maps provide a historical atlas.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. The overwhelming horror and scale of the genocide associated with Auschwitz isolates it in the human imagination. In the 1940s, however, this epicentre of the Holocaust was located at the edge of a town of 30,000 that had become the focus of a Germanisation programme involving wholescale urban re-con…struction, massive industrial investment and ruthless ethnic cleansing. The authors show that the town of Auschwitz and the camp of the same name were the centrepiece of Himmler's ambitious project to recover in Nazi-ruled Poland the German legacy of the Tuetonic Knights and Frederick the Great. Analysing the close ties between the 700-year history of the town and the five-year evolution of the concentration camp in its suburbs, they offer an interpretation of the origins and creation of the death camp. / Illustrated through out. /// This is a 1st edition hardback with its dust-jacket, in near to fine condition-top of the 'D.Js' spine a little creased, otherwise in fine condition. (443 pages).

Aggiungi al carrelloVg/vg near fine both. dj is clean and sharp-cornered. not price clipped. contents are clean and bright . no marginalia or markings . tightly bound in and all pages present. Illustrated. Concise, dramatic and magisterial. Drawing on oral histories recorded by the authors over fifteen years across Europe and the United States, as…well as on dicuments, letters and diaries never before analysed, it changes the way we look at the greatest crime in history. Starting with a brief history of Judaism in Europe, the authors quickly set the stage for the Second World War, tracing the tensions mounting among populations, and the economic, social and political reasons for them. The Europe that permitted the Holocaust was not created in 1933, though thereafter descent quickly became inevitable. Vividly but with meticulous scholarship, Holocaust shows us the early days of Nazism, and the German leaders' plans for resettlement of the Jews in Madagascar or the rural marshes of Poland. It reveals the sometimes personal, sometimes political concerns - often having more to do with old land rivalries than anti-semitism - which dictated different countries' treatment of their Jewish populations. It illustrates how new measures and abuses, each harsher than the last, were devised and implemented - even after it was clear that Germany had lost the war - until liberation was finally reached in 1945. Though this book fully captures the horror, it never allows the personal stories to be subsumed in numbing detail. We meet perpetrators and collaborators, victims, bystanders and witnesses, rescuers and resisters. What emerges is a multi-faceted treatment of moral dilemmas as well as facts, one which negotiates the chasm between two histories, that of the people who carried out these terrible deeds and that of the victims and their families. It helps us to understand how it was possible for between five and six million human beings, in the heart of a civilization that thought itself the zenith of human history, to find themselves singled out, disenfranchised, marked, imprisoned and killed.
