Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Evoking her interactions with Chicagos urban geography, Dysons steel and wood constructions and abstract paintings create a new road map for navigating the built environmentWorking in painting, drawing and sculpture, Beacon, New Yorkbased artist Torkwase Dyson (born 1973) combines expressive mark-making and geometric abstraction to explore the continuity between ecology, infrastructure and architecture. Dyson deconstructs, distills and interrogates the built environment, exploring how individuals, particularly Black and brown people, negotiate, negate and transform systems and spatial order. She confronts issues of environmental liberation and envisions a path toward a more equitable future. Of Line and Memory draws from years of Dysons own research and spatial memory of navigating the waterways and urban architecture of Chicago. Using the South Shore Cultural Center, a lakeshore landmark with rich historical and architectural significance, as a point of departure, Dyson extracts, reduces and refines architectural and visual cues into geometric shapes and painterly abstractions. A Liquid Belonging, is concerned with embodied experiences that refuse brut infrastructure in the legacy of Modernism in favour of new spatial expectations that inspire liveness and acknowledgements of multisensory belonging For many years, the artist has understood water as a geography with an indelible tie to architecture and infrastructure. Growing up in Southeast Chicago, living in Mississippi, and studying the intractable damage of extraction have inspired Dyson to explore different water ecosystems by diving in the global south. The artist s diving practice is in conversation with her research surrounding relationships between environmental liberation, structural violence, and the bodies of water that make up most of the planet. Her art, which often examines the meanings of poetic movement asserting humanity, is deeply informed by these ideas and practices. Through her dispersals of abstract forms, Dyson invites viewers into spatial and perceptual practices that affirm improvisation, indeterminacy, and migration.…
