Of particular interest is the lineage from Rollo, the first Duke of Normandy, through the Danish, English, and Norwegian descendants who settled along the French and English coasts. The author uses primary sources and medieval documents to offer unprecedented family histories. The meticulously researched Genealogical Tables and Appendices give clear and easy -to -follow lineages, ancestry, and descendants of most of the ancient Norman families. Unique to this text is an extensive chapter on the descendants of William the Conqueror's stepbrothers, as well as the Warenne line. The author traces the fate of the various Norman earldoms, such as those of Pembroke and Norfolk, and shows how they were assimilated into English society. The boards are navy cloth and have gilt titles to front and spine. They are very loose from the text block; the spine ends and corners are bumped and frayed; overall they are quite clean, with a few marks to rear. The black end papers show the webbing from the spine and there are tears along the centre. The rear free end paper is missing. The text block is firm and flat; with small marks on some pages and age-toned cut edges. The edges of front free end paper, pages xiii to xvi of Synopsis are very ragged; the end page is grubby. Name of previous owner in pencil on first page of Preface. Not annotated. "The Clevedon Community Bookshop Co-operative Bindery Team" have tacked in three loose pages to keep them within the book. Fair condition and reasonable reading copy.

Although known for his work in developmental biology and genetics, the brilliant young Conrad Hal Waddington was also passionate about poetry and art. Whilst at Cambridge he began The Loft Press printing work by Isherwood and Edward Upward amongst others.
