From an on-line posting: "The authors were invited to prepare a paper for a conference on Civil-Military Relations in the fall, 1994. That paper was translated into an article for the Winter, 1995 edition of The Washington Quarterly under the title… "Civil-Military Relations in the United States: The State of the Debate." Although the intensity of interest in this subject has fallen from the front pages of the newspapers, the authors have here suggested that the debate needs to continue and that it should start with identification of the right questions. Dr. Douglas V. Johnson II was with the Strategic Studies Institute from 1985 until 2009. His 30 years of service in the U.S. Army included combat tours, and troop and staff assignments, and faculty duty at the Military Academy and at Fort Leavenworth. Dr. Johnson's current research addresses Army transformation. He holds a B.S. from the U.S. Military Academy, a M.A. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. from Temple University." Very good. Hardcover. Condizione: Like New. Near Fine. This two volume set is bound in matching navy blue publisher's cloth. Covers are plain with gilt lettering on each spine. Profusely illustrated with facsimile art by William Blake, the 537 watercolour drawings and 43 engravings reproduced in these volumes constitute Blake's largest pic…torial work. They comprise a page-for-page illustration of all nine Nights of the once famous Night Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality by Edward Young (1683-1765). Transformed by Blake's imagination they shine as an illuminated serial fresco of irony, comedy, and prophecy. This publication in book form, with its high proportion of full-colour plates, is a necessary response to the ever-increasing interest in William Blake and to the exacting inclusiveness of a critical scholarship which demands easy access and frequent reference to the artist's entire work. Volume I and II, containing the Introduction and Plates, will be followed by Volumes III and IV, the Commentary. (From the dust jacket; Volumes III and IV are NOT included within this listing.) Matching illustrated dust jackets in color against an off white background; black lettering on the cover and spine. Slipcase is navy blue with white interior, and includes a slipcase divider between the two volumes. (Slipcase measures 15.25" tall x 12.25" wide x 4" thick).VOLUME I contents include: List of figures in introduction; List of watercolor designs reproduced in color in Volume II; Abbreviations, numbering, short titles, markings; Introduction; The History of the Designs; The Watercolour Drawings; The Engravings; Evolution of the Designs; Copies of the Engraved Work; Checklist of Studies and Reproductions; Notes to introduction; Index to introduction; The watercolour designs (NT 1-263). xvi, 99 pp., plates 1-263. (Measures 14.75" tall x 11.75" wide x 1.5" thick).VOLUME II contents include: List of watercolour designs reproduced in color; The watercolour designs (NT 264-537); The watercolour designs: Colour plates of selected designs; The engraved designs: colour plates of title-pages of coloured copies; The engraved designs: proofs; The engraved designs: the 1797 edition. viii, plates 264-537. (Measures 14.75" tall x 11.75" wide x 2" thick).ABOUT THE ARTIST: William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his life, Blake has become a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age. (Wikipedia). CONDITION: Volumes themselves are like new and beautiful. Illustrations are mesmerizing. Dust jackets are near fine as they are price clipped, and minimal wrinkling at the foredge of Volume I, and a moderate crease at the middle of the spine. Slipcase is VG+ with mild rubbing and light wear, particularly at the seams and corners. A magnificent set. At over 18 lbs. with packaging materials, due to the size and weight of this set, an additional shipping charge will apply. Please note that a signature will be required for this item upon delivery. Full refund if not satisfied. Color And B&W Illustration (illustratore).

Clausen is writing to Lucas in the latter's capacity as chairman of the London publishers Methuen & Co., and the letter is a 'note of introduction' for Clausen's 'friend Mr Curnow Vosper, who has written and illustrated a children's book, which he wishes to submit to you. | Mr. Vosper is a painter,…a member of the old Water-colour Society, and I have no doubt his work is known to you. Aggiungi al carrelloAccording to the Oxford DNB entry on Carter's wife the crime writer Margery Allingham (whose book jackets were among those he designed): 'Their amiable, childless marriage was funded by Allingham's increasingly successful fiction. And, although Youngman Carter assisted his wife as a sounding board for plot design, and by produci…ng covers and illustrations for her work, he found it difficult to sell his art. Allingham supported his increasingly expensive tastes until after the Second World War, when Pip came into his own writing society columns for The Tatler, which he edited from 1954.' For the letters' recipient E. V. Knox, editor of Punch from 1932 to 1949, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. The letters are in good condition, lightly aged; the galley proof is on the usual cheap paper, discoloured and chipping. (The first two of the four books reviewed by Knox in the proof are crime novels: quite appropriately considering Carter's wife and Knox's brother Ronald, author of the celebrated 'Ten Commandments' of detective fiction.) All eight letters signed 'Youngman Carter'. Three of the eight letters are in autograph: two from 1953 and the other undated. The letters are businesslike, exclusively concerned with the practicalities of reviewing (the sending of copy, 'wordage', deadlines, arrangements for a holiday 'deputy'. On one occasion he asks Knox to send 'an article concerning itself with recommended reading for the Festival [of Britain]', on another he asks him to review H. E. Bates's 'The Face of England', as its illustrator, an 'artist called Kirsting' has 'himself been very kind and unassuming to us in other directions'. On 14 May 1953 he asks Knox to review 'The Christs Hospital Book', of which Carter is 'the most insignificant of the editors'. He explains that he is drawing Knox's attention to 'its existence because the subject is naturally very near my heart, although I think it can stand on its own legs. It is a labour of love by one and all concerned: if you can think it worth a line or so I would be deeply grateful'. The galley proof ('Book Reviews | By E. V. Knox | Holiday Amusements') is headed 'B?20-7?TATLER?July 29 Book Review?1 9-pt. Baskerville'. It can be dated to 1953 from the publication dates of the four books reviewed: 'Post Mortem' by Guy Cullingford ('I rank Mr. Guy Cullingford's Gilbert Worth very high among murderees.'); 'Symphony in Murder' by Amelia R. Long ('And who fired the pistol, and how? If you can discover before the last chapter, in which the whole orchestra is brought into the house for a demonstration by the Homicide Bureau, you deserve a free ticket for the Festival Hall.'); 'Things I Don't Remember' by Jeanne de Casalis (the author 'has a charming way of confusing reminiscence with fiction'); and 'Regional Books' published by Robert Hale. There are three proof corrections by Knox. From the E. V. Knox papers.

Aggiungi al carrello1p., 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed in type to 'My dear Shepard,' but with the last word corrected in autograph to 'Ernest'. He has now 'made sufficient progress with Monmouthshire' to be able to give Shephard 'a line': 'The first two verses bear upon the Wye valley and the Usk valley, of which Tintern is the be…st symbol. The last verse states that should King Arthur return to set up his table once more, he would be able to make a rapid fortune by providing tea, | With Guinevere and Lancelot | Alert to keep the water hot.' He suggests that 'the lower part of the page shows King Arthur and his knights waiting on a crowd of trippers, and in the upper part you have Tintern, and perhaps a winding road crowded with cars and chars-à-banc, with a background of wooded mountain scenery.' He concludes by stating that he has 'asked Mr. Ashley Cooper, the cricket collector', to let Shepard 'have the three Graces', with the assurance that he will return them 'safely and quickly'. The poem appeared in Punch in the same year.

Aggiungi al carrello390 x 245 mm. (15 3/8 x 9 5/8"). APPEALING CONTEMPORARY MARBLED CALF, GILT, covers with border roll of alternating diamonds and lilies, raised bands, spine compartments with thistle, tulip, and acorn centerpiece, foliate cornerpieces, burgundy morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH 66 SENSITIVELY DRAWN AND…EXPERTLY ENGRAVED PORTRAITS of notable personages after Adriaen van der Werff, created for Larrey's "Histoire." Brunet III, 852; Graesse IV, 110-11; Lowndes II, 1313 (all citing Larrey's "Histoire"). Leather with a few minor scratches, a half dozen plates lightly browned, isolated mild marginal foxing, but A VERY FINE COPY--the plates especially clean and fresh, with rich impressions of the engravings, and in a lustrous, unrestored, contemporaneous binding. These brilliant portraits by Dutch Baroque painter Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722) were unanimously deemed by Brunet, Graesse, and Lowndes to be the only valuable part of Larrey's otherwise disappointing history of England, Scotland, and Ireland; and our former owner seems to have agreed, choosing to have them bound--quite beautifully--apart from the text. The engravings here are mostly of 16th and 17th century kings, queens, religious figures, and statesmen of England, but they also include some continental European monarchs such as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Philip II of Spain, and Frederick the Great of Prussia. The plates are not only beautifully engravedby accomplished Dutch engravers Pieter van Gunst, Cornelis Vermeulen, and Gerard Valckbut are wonderfully convincing images with considerable personality. For once, Queen Elizabeth I looks like a real woman, as opposed to a tightly cinched flattened figure floating above a farthingale and dwarfed by mountainous ruffs. And Henry VII looks much less regal than he does haggard and rueful. According to the "Handbook of Painting," van der Werrf's portraits "were so highly admired by princes and men of fortune, that he found it impossible to execute all the commissions given him." His fortune was made when John William, Elector of the Palatinate, commissioned his own portrait: so pleased was the elector with this work that he put the artist on a generous retainer, presented him with a portrait executed in diamonds, and awarded him a knighthood. Larrey's "Histoire d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse, et d'Irlande" was issued between 1697 and 1713, with a second edition in 1723. Brunet notes that the work was available with and without plates, suggesting the suite of engravings was issued apart from the text; it is obvious our set has been together from the beginning in its present early 18th century binding.

Provenance: Samuel Ashton Thompson Yates (1842-1903), bookplate dated 1894.?? First Edition?of Cats? retelling of the Biblical tale of Queen Vasthi, the first wife of the Persian king Ahasuerus, who refused her husband?s summons to appear before his guests wearing the royal crown to display her beauty (in the Jewish tradition of the Midrash she was ordered to wear nothing else, which would better explain her refusal). For this she was punished with exile, and the King went on to marry another strong-willed woman, Esther. The tale was especially familiar to 17th-century Dutch audiences, for whom Esther had come to symbolize Netherlandish resistance to Spain.?? The first part of Cats? word-playing verse adaptation, whose title may be translated as The Theater of Manly Respectability, is a long speech in the Queen?s defense and in defense of all women, followed by a speech against her and in favor of ?Manly Respectability.? The work concludes with the Judgment, which is that Vasthi should obey her husband, because women?s subservience to men is a law of nature. A final poem titled ?Aller Princessen, Spiegel, aller Vrovwen, Spoor,? is illustrated with an engraving showing the humbled queen wearing a yoke around her neck. The parallels and differences between the Biblical Ahasuerus and Herodotus? tale of King Candaules (supplied in Latin and Dutch translations in an appendix), whose wife?s rebellion was more successful, are fully exploited by Cats and by the illustrator, Cats? usual partner the painter and engraver Adriaen van de Venne (whose brother Jan published the edition). Van de Venne?s engravings, notably the scene of Candaules? naked wife being surprised by Gyges, served as models for a number of Dutch painters. The Van de Venne brothers played a central role in the dissemination of Cats? poetry, and it is their joint production that makes the works come alive: ?The complete works of Cats, together with Van de Venne?s illustrations formed a sort of housebook of the Dutch people which remained popular for two centuries.? (Bol, p. 117). Following the privilege on the title verso is a letter from the publisher to all bailiffs, officials and readers (?Noodige Waersschouwinge.?), complaining of the many counterfeit editions of an earlier Cats work, the 1620 Self-stryt, and explaining how to tell them apart. A second edition (without the Noodige Waersschouwinge) appeared later in 1622, and several further editions followed.? De Jonge van Ellemeet, Museum Catsianum, 97; Bol, Adriaen Pietersz. Van de Venne (1989), p. 118.
