First edition of Tolkien's second published book, a scholarly edition of one of the most important works of medieval English literature. The poem was an important influence on Tolkien: he produced his own verse translation (published posthumously in 1975) and he described the original as "one of the masterpieces of fourteenth-century art in England, and of English literature as a whole" (Tolkien, p. 72). Tolkien, The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays, 1984. Octavo. Photographic frontispiece and plate reproducing pages of the manuscript; errata leaf tipped-in after p. vi, as issued. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, axe vignette and single frame to front cover in gilt, edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Ownership signature of Dorothy White, dated 1929, to front free endpaper. Spots to covers and edges; jacket unpriced as issued, spine and folds toned and rubbed, faint crease to front panel, nicks to extremities: a very good copy in very good jacket.…
