Poggendorff II, 1388. 1800 Gramm. Buch. - - - Von Zach (1754-1832) fu chiamato (1783) dal duca Ernesto II di Sassonia a dirigere l'Osservatorio di Gotha. Intorno al 1800 fu, insieme a J. H. Scröter, tra i promotori della campagna di osservazioni volte a individuare il "pianeta mancante", che, secondo la legge di Titius e Bode, avrebbe dovuto trovarsi fra le orbite di Marte e di Giove. Successivamente (1815) fu chiamato a Napoli dal re G. Murat perché vi dirigesse l'Osservatorio di Capodimonte, posto che egli dovette abbandonare dopo la restaurazione borbonica. (Treccani)". - - - Baron Franz Xaver von Zach (Franz Xaver Freiherr von Zach), né le 4 juin 1754 à Pest et mort le 2 septembre 1832 à Paris est un astronome austro-allemand. Franz Xaver von Zach servit quelque temps en Autriche, puis voyagea en Angleterre, résida plusieurs années à Londres, se livrant à l'étude des mathématiques, et entra plus tard au service du duc Ernest II de Saxe-Gotha-Altenbourg, qui lui confia en 1787 la direction de l'observatoire de Seeberg. Il entreprit en 1798 les Éphémérides géographiques qui se continuent encore, et publia à partir de 1800 la Correspondance mensuelle pour les progrès de la géographie et de l'astronomie, qu'il continua jusqu'en 1828. Il est devenu membre de la Royal Society le 12 avril 1804. En 1808, von Zach observe depuis Marseille le phénomène de la vision du massif du Canigou, situé à 250 km de là, qui se produit deux fois par an par réfraction de la lumière Une partie de la correspondance du Baron Xaver von Zach avec Joseph Jérôme Lefrançois de Lalande, son homologue français, entre 1792 et 1804 est conservée à l'Observatoire de Paris. La provenance de ces lettres est mentionnée dans le Rapport annuel sur l'état de l'Observatoire de Paris pour l'année 1897, p.27 : « Mme veuve Laugier a fait don à l'Observatoire de divers manuscrits de son mari, M. E. Laugier, membre de l'Institut et du Bureau des longitudes ; d'une série de manuscrits de Delambre et d'une liasse de lettres écrites par le baron de Zach à Jérôme Lalande dans les années 1792 à 1804.» - - - Zach studied physics at the Royal University of Pest, and served for some time in the Austrian army. He taught at the University of Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). He lived in Paris in 1780-83, and in London from 1783 to 1786 as tutor in the house of the Saxon ambassador, Hans Moritz von Brühl. In Paris and London he entered the circles of astronomers like Joseph de Lalande, Pierre-Simon Laplace and William Herschel. In 1786 he was appointed by Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg director of the new observatory on Seeberg hill at Gotha, which was finished in 1791. At the close of the 18th century, he organised the "Celestial Police", a group of twenty-four astronomers, to prepare for a systematic search for the "missing planet" predicted by the Titius-Bode law between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres was discovered by accident just as the search was getting underway. Using predictions made of the position of Ceres by Carl Friedrich Gauss, on 31 December 1801/1 January 1802, Zach (and, independently one night later, Heinrich Wilhelm Matthias Olbers) recovered Ceres after it was lost during its passage behind the Sun. After the death of the duke in 1804, Zach accompanied the duke's widow on her travels in the south of Europe, and the two settled in Genoa in 1815 where he directed an observatory. He moved back to Paris in 1827 and died there in 1832. Zach published Tables of the Sun (Gotha, 1792; new and improved edition, Gotha, 1804), and numerous papers on geographical subjects.
