Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. In this book is a collection of essays with a strongly social tone, considering such topics as 'Open Spaces', 'Over-Population', 'Overworked Shop Assistants' etc - and ending with appeals to both 'Men of Leisure' and 'Men of Wealth'. The writer was clearly much exercised by the social problems he could see all around him in London in particular in the mid-late 19th century. Reginald Brabazon, 12th Earl of Meath, KP, GCVO, GBE, GCStJ, PC (Ire) (1841-1929) was an Irish politician and philanthropist, born into an old Anglo-Irish family in London. When his father succeeded to the Earldom in 1851, Reginald, now the heir (his elder brother, Jacques, died of diphtheria in 1844), was styled Lord Brabazon. He was educated at Eton College and in 1863 he became a clerk in the Foreign Office. He married some 5 years later, and refused a diplomatic posting to Greece. He and his wife did not need to work so they decided to deal with "social problems and the relief of human suffering". His charities included the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association which he founded in 1882 to create public parks and gardens in London. Our book is in good general condition for its age, bound in dark olive-green cloth with title in gilt letters on the front, and title etc on the spine. External wear is fairly modest, with some scuffing and stains, particularly to the back cover, rubbing of edges and angles, one small crease at the foot of the back cover, some bumping of corners, and shelf wear to top & tail of the spine. Inside, the dark brown endpapers are both cracked and the binding thread visible at the front. A previous owner's name at the top of the halftitle page has been scribbled over. Otherwise, the binding is generally firm with occasional weakness between gatherings, but no loose pages; pages are all clean and bright (only the halftitle page is mottled with brown); an errata slip is bound in between the Contents list and the first page of the first essay.
