(Alexanderon, E.F.W.) **A Very Early Technical Summary of the First Public Demonstration of an Operating Television in a Private Home** "A New Development in Television, Simplified Equipment Adaptable to the Home"in Radio Engineering ("The Technical Magazine of the Radio Industry"), vol VIII, number… 2, February 1928, with the article on pp 19-21, with three text photos of the equipment. 12"x9", 64pp. Condition: GOOD copy, not without its short tears here and there on the cover. Good, crisp copy, say 4-5/10. This is a very early report of the public demonstration of the feasibility and possibility of television receivers being used at home by the general public. The demonstration was done 13 January 1928 (again the journal offered here was published for February 1928) and immediately reported the next day in the NY Times as the first public demonstration of television broadcasting into private homes. One of the three homes selected for the demo was that of E.F.W. Alexanderson, who is the main subject of this article and who was an outstanding early pioneer in the fields of radio and television. As a matter of fact Alexanderson succeeded in receiving a signal on his television earlier than the test being discussed here (in October 1927) but it was a private and a non-demonstrating private test. (Alexanderson was an outstanding engineer who was associated with the labs at RCA and GE an dwho was also president of the IRE.).

Part II. is an experimental study of the electrical discharge on "exhausted tubes". One of the conclusions in Part III. is that "the electric arc and the stratified discharge in vacuum tubes are modifications of the same phenomenon". First appearance of this importent paper in the development of early televison."Faradays discovery in 1838 of the negative dark space had revived intyerest in the glow discharge caused by conduction of electricity through gases at low pressure, but Gassiot's interest in this discharge was directly stimulated by W.R. Grove's almost incidental report in 1852 that the discharge was "striated by transverse non-luminous bands." In his initial investigations showed that if enough care were exercised to achieve a sufficiently low pressure, situations could be produced in the Torricellian vacuum. Next he demonstrated that both a static electric machine and a Ruhmkorff coil with a Grove cell produced a striated discharge. This once again confirmed the identity of these two electricities. He also noticed that a powerfull elexctromagnet divided the striations into what appeared to be two distinct columns. The paper in which Gassiot announced these discoveries (the first paper offered) was honoured as the Royal Society's Bakerian lecture for 1858."(DSB V, p. 292).(Shiers & Shiers "Early Televison. A Bibliography to 1940", No. 25 & 29).

First appearance of these main paper in the development of Television, and an importent step towards the discovery of Röntgen-Rays, as Hittorf describes his discovery how the cathode glow spread toward the anode, how solid objects near the cathode would cast shadows in the phosphorescent glow in the glass, and that this glow was produced by raylike emanations that traveled in straight lines from the cathode rays."Following Plückers studies, in 1869 Hittorf began a series of investigations of the discharge phenomena. He verified the effect of the magnetic field on the glow discharge and the fluorescence of the glass tube itself. He found that any solid or fluid body, whether an insulator or a conductor, when placed in front of the cathode cut off the glow. By constructing an L-shaped tube with electrodes at the two ends, Hittorf was able to establish that the glow was generated from a point cathode and traveled in straight lines. "We will therefore speak of rectilinear path or rays of glow, and consider any point of the cathode as the source of a cone of rays" .These results led the brilliant researches on gaseous conduction by Crookes ten years later (1879) and the eventual identification of the cathode rays as electrons by J.J. Thomson (1897)."(DSB, VI, p.439).(Shiers & Shiers "Early Televison. A Bibliography to 1940", No.45). - Magie "A Source Book in Physics", p. 561 ff.

The image of a pier is printed in color on the verso. Very good. The African-American comedian and actor Edmund Lincoln Anderson (1905-1977) was known as "Rochester" to ea…rly radio and television audiences. After starting his show business career on vaudeville, Anderson went on to play the character of Jack Benny's valet Rochester van Jones, known as "Rochester" on The Jack Benny Program broadcast on NBC radio. He was the first African-American to have a role on nationwide radio and continued in the role when the show moved to television in 1950. Although the portrayals were initially racist, as most depictions of African-Americans were during this period, the tone changed following World War II, possibly as the horrors of the Holocaust were revealed, and Jack Benny and his writers made conscious effort to remove stereotypical aspects from Rochester's character.
