Thick book (626 pp) is tight, square, sharp-cornered and free of markings or flaws inside and out, other than some minor fading to spine, name of prior and only owner to inside front cover (Oliver Garceau, Lowell House I-13, 1932, Harvard University) and a syllabus for the Anthropology class Garceau was taking with Hooton at Harvard. Earnest Albert Hooton (18871954) American physical anthropologist known for his work on racial classification and his popular writings such as the book Up From The Ape. Hooton sat on the Committee on the Negro, a group that 'focused on the anatomy of blacks and reflected the racism of the time.' At the same time, Hooton maintained that no scientific basis existed correlating mentality with racial variation. ".Each racial type runs the gamut from idiots and criminals to geniuses and statesmen. No type produces a majority of individuals from either.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'The Ancient Inhabitants of the Canary Islands' is an exhaustive anthropological and archaeological investigation into the indigenous peoples of the Canarian archipelago. This scholarly work, authored by the influential physical anthropologist Earnest A. Hooton, presents a systematic analysis of the skeletal remains, cultural artifacts, and ancestral origins of the Guanches and other early island residents.Through a rigorous application of craniometry and comparative anatomy, the study explores the biological relationships between the ancient inhabitants and the Berber populations of North Africa. The text provides a detailed survey of archaeological sites across the islands, examining burial practices, linguistic remnants, and material culture to reconstruct the social and religious lives of these isolated prehistoric communities. Hooton's work synthesized the scientific knowledge of the time to address long-standing questions regarding the colonization of the islands and the ethnic composition of their first settlers. As a foundational text in the field of Atlantic archaeology and physical anthropology, 'The Ancient Inhabitants of the Canary Islands' remains a vital resource for understanding the historical development and cultural legacy of the region. Its methodical approach and wealth of data offer profound insights into the unique human history of this volcanic archipelago before the era of European expansion. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Aggiungi al carrelloRebound Hard Cover. Condizione: Good -. No Jacket. First Edition. Indian Village Site and Cemetery Near Madisonville, Ohio(Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Vol. VIII, No. 1) by Earnest A. Hooton, With Notes on the Artifacts by Charles C. Willoughby, was published by the Peabody Museum, Cambridge, Mass., in 1920. This 137-page, 92-year-old, 6" X 9 1/4", thought-to-be First Edition(for what it's worth!) offering is a rebound ex-library copy in G- condition. Let's be clear--physically, overall, this offering is still in rather firm/sound shape. There are just so many little flaws present that I cannot rate it any higher. Foremost among them are the fairly frequent(15-20, roughly) small to medium-sized tears of various pages of text, all of which I felt compelled to clear tape/secure(this offering was printed on a very thin stock paper to begin with, and age has made said pages pretty brittle). Handler/Peruser, beware, as you work with this learned, excruciatingly detailed study. Modest yellowing is observed of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages. There are several of the standard library markings seen, including some mild stickiness toward the bottoms of both cover boards resulting from a previous person's removal of what was no doubt a Dewey decimal label. There is an 1 1/2"-wide X 1 3/4"-high piece of the bottom-right corner of page 3/4 missing/gone, and pages 93-112 had their top-outer corners bent in/creased(they are now bent back in place, and thus now mildly creased). The second blank page in from back loose end page has been removed/is missing, for some mysterious reason! From Note, "The explorations which form the basis of the following paper were carried on intermittently under the auspices of the Peabody Museum from 1882 to 1911. During this period, Dr. Charles L. Metz of Madisonville, the discoverer of the site, had general supervision of the work. .It is hoped that the study of these remains as set forth in the following pages will prove of special value to students of the archaeology of the Ohio region, as it connects the culture of the occupants of this site definitely with the protohistoric and late prehistoric period of the [Little Miami] Valley." This ambitious history/implications of what all was unearthed at the Madisonville dig site is presented in some seven(7) parts/sections: The Discovery of the Site and History of the Explorations; The Burials; The Cache-Pits; Hearths and Other Remains; Artifacts From the Site; The Skeletal Remains: and, lastly, Conclusion. Sprinkled throughout are several black and white Drawings and some 30 black and white photographs and/or nicely rendered line drawings, not to mention many, many charts and diagrams, all helpful in clarifying points brought out/explored in Mr. Hooton's text. Despite its flaws, this volume's contents, for one interested in the subject under consideration, outweigh the conditional annoyances, in my mind, Reader, with You being the final, appropriate arbiter. Thanks very much!. 30 Plates, Five Illustrations (illustratore). …

A few occasional pencil markings, otherwise very good copies. "A stimulating inquiry into the history and possible future of that far from perfect natural phenomenon sometimes referred to as Homo Sapiens, written for the layman and not the scientist, because the scientist does not control evolution; he only studies it" "The famous author of Apes, Men & Morons is that rare phenomenon, a noted scientist who talks and writes in the words we use everyday. He is often startling, always outspoken, sometimes shocking, but he is a born writer with a highly developed sense of humour. Not least of the delights of Twilight of Man is that Professor Hooton has illustrated it with his own drawings.".…
