Ebd. - Karl Joseph Ebert (1835 - 1926) absolvierte in Würzburg u.a. bei Rudolf Albert Kölliker und Rudolf Virchow eine umfassende medizinische und zootomische Ausbildung, wurde 1859 promoviert und war dann mehrere Jahre lang als Prosektor an Köllikers Z…ootomischem Institut tätig, bevor er sich 1862 habilitierte. Seit 1865 a.o. Prof. der Anatomie und Pathologie in Zürich, wurde er dort 1869 zum Ordinarius ernannt und erhielt 1874 zudem den Lehrstuhl für Pathologie, Histologie und Entwicklungsgeschichte an der Tierarzneischule in Zürich. In Zürich gelang ihm 1879 die Entdeckung des später als "Eberth-Gaffky-Bazillus" bezeichneten Typhuserregers (Die Organismen in den Organen bei Typhus abdominalis, 1880). 1881 folgte er einem Ruf nach Halle, wo er zunächst vergleichende Anatomie und Histologie, seit 1893 die gesamte Anatomie und 1885-1911 pathologische Anatomie lehrte. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Untersuchungen aus den von ihm gelehrten Fächern sowie zur Parasitologie und Bakteriologie. EBERTH beschäftigte sich vor allem mit der Bakteriologie und führte Ende der 60er Jahre ungefähr 170 Autopsien während der Choleraepidemie in der Zürcher Altstadt durch. Darauf folgte 1879 als große Leistung die Entdeckung des Erregers des Typhus: Eberth…ella typhi (heute Salmonella typhi). In der Folge hat er sich auch mit Mykosen und Nematoden beschäftigt. EBERTH übernahm 1878 die Vorlesung für allgemeine Pathologie von CLOETTA. EBERTH war 1876 - 1877 Dekan der Medizinischen Fakultät. 1871 bis 1874 hat Privatdozent OTTO VON BOLLINGER (1843-1909) bei EBERTH gearbeitet. VON BOLLINGER wurde 1880 zum Ordinarius in München berufen. EBERTH zog 1881 nach Halle, dies nicht zuletzt wegen des gespannten Verhältnisses zum damaligen Chirurgen ROSE. But a year later, in a paper written collaboration with Eberth (Eberth & Schimmelbusch, 1886) his stance was considerably modified. They wrote: 'It is the platelets and not the leucocytes…that adhere to the damaged vessel wall and to foreign bodies and through their accumulation, essentially form the white thrombus. In this paper they coined the name 'viscous metamorphosis' for the change the platelets undergo following adhesion to form a white thrombus. They also suggested that it was the coincidence of the development of viscous metamorphosis and the slowing of the blood flow that made possible the formation of the thrombus. Despite the considerable confusion in the minds of many authors as to the nature and origin of the platelets, as described by Schimmelbusch, a confusion which to a greater or lesser extent persisted into the 20th century, Bizzozero findings have, of course, been confirmed over the years, as has the prescience of the recommendation of Schultze that the study 'of these granules is enthusiastically recommended to those concerned with in-depth studies of the blood of humans.'.
