Berliner Porzellan die Manufaktur Friedrichs des Grossen: 1763-1786 (Berlin Porcelain, The Manufactory of Frederick the Great: 1763-1783), a very scarce commemorative collection of the Royal Porcelain Factory opened by the Prussian King, edited by Georg Lenz. Particularly scarce in the UK, with only two instituional copies, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum and at the British Library. In the publisher's original blue quarter morocco. Original end papers preserved, with an ex-libris bookplate to the front pastedown of Volume I. Tissue guards preserved to each plate. Volume I contains all seventy-four photogravure copper plates, including those in colour, while Volume II contains all eighty-seven photogravure copper plates, including those in colour. Accompanying each plate is an explanatory leaf offering descriptions of the corresponding plate. Collated complete. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of when Frederick founded the Porcelain factory at the request of merchant Johann Ernst, this fascinating work showcases the artistic development of German porcelain since the factory's inception. Volume I contains a short history, timeline of plates, and plates 1-74, and II contains plates 75-162.
