In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with some bumping and wear to extremities. With an ink mark to rear board. Hinges tender. The English clergyman and man of letters John Mitford (1781-1859) had contemplated an edition of Thomas Gray's Works since 1811; in 1814 he produced this first accurate edition of Gray's poems, complete with notes, a biography, and a critical essay. It would be the first of many editions produced by Mitford over the years.

According to Wikipedia, works bound by Hayday became famous, and his name attached to a book raised its value twenty-five per cent. William Pickering, whose anchor and dolphin device appears on the titles, introduced him to many wealthy patrons. Despite this, Hayday was unable to compete with cheaper binders and was bankrupt in 1861. Note bookplates for Field Marshall Charles Moore, 1st Marquess of Drogheda, and blind stamp of Prof. Ernest Sirluck (1918-2013) who taught in the University of Toronto's English department.
