It argues that these inequalities can be reduced through policy. Part I employs cross-national statistical models on a newly compiled 130-country dataset to show that historical ethno-class exploitation - especially the legacies of slavery and colonial rule - is a stronger and more persistent driver of high inequality than heterogeneity per se. It also shows how political institutions - democracy, federalism, and welfare states - can mitigate disparities and specifies the conditions under which these levers are most effective. Part II develops a typology of ethnic stratification, from projects to preserve homogeneity (assimilation, selective immigration, secession) to explicit systems of domination and exploitation. Case studies include Sweden and Japan (distinct egalitarian trajectories), India (caste heterogeneity with moderate inequality), China and Eastern Europe (ethno-national cleavages under Communist rule), Latin America (color-based class structures, or pigmentocracies), post-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa (ethno-class regimes), and the long-run aftermaths of apartheid in South Africa and racialized segregation in the United States. The book also offers a focused analysis of Israel as a contemporary ethno-national state with rising inequality. Moving from diagnosis to prescription, it evaluates policy strategies to reduce ethno-class inequality: strengthening federal arrangements, empowering deprived groups through education and regional planning, and developing welfare and migration models suited to the Global South. -- This book contributes significantly to the fields of sociology, economics, and political science by offering a holistic framework for understanding global economic inequalities. The typology of ethnic stratification and the identification of historical legacies (for example, slavery and colonialism) as persistent drivers of inequality challenge simplistic narratives that attribute disparities solely to current economic policies or cultural differences.
