For motives of greed Waite poisoned both his in-laws, who had always been kind to him. For the same motive Mrs McKay was kidnapped, but although her family tried to ransom her, her body was never found. The "Vampire of Dusseldorf" committed his horrifying crimes for sexual gratification, as did the soldier who took a child from her hospital bed, then molested and killed her. Jealousy, too, can lead to crime, as in the case of the possessive American "Mother Duncan". However it is the murders which have no motive which shock us most. The brutal, pointless killing of the beautiful American girl "The Black Dahlia"; the grisly slaughter of Madame Lancelin and her daughter by their two maids, the Papin sisters--both these show crime at its mot inhuman, inexplicable and horrific.
