Famed as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle was a fascinating man in his own right - physician, sportsman, crusader for social justice and war correspondent. From his early whale-hunting days to his later celebrity, Conan Doyle's life was as gripping as any of his own adventure tales. --- This stunningly candid volume of never-before-published letters sheds fascinating light on a man who has remained largely hidden behind his most famous character. Gracefully written and consistently revealing, these letters illuminate Conan Doyle's life, character and career as never before.' (Quote taken from the front inner flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first impression of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper, in very nice collectible condition. A fascinating and comprehensive collection of the letters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Marc Getter (Cover design) (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. An attractive and complete set of Dickens' Works in nineteen volumes, uniformly bound in three-quarter leather. The Biographical Edition was published by Dickens' original publishers Chapman and Hall and presents his major novels, stories, travel writings and other works, each volume accompanied by an introductory biographical and literary preface. Particularly appealing is the extensive use of the illustrations associated with Dickens' works, including those by George Cruikshank and Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), together with George Cattermole, Marcus Stone, Luke Fildes, John Leech, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Richard Doyle, Frederick Walker and others. These include many of the images which have become inseparably associated with Dickens' characters and their original publications. The Biographical Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens, in Nineteen Volumes. Edited with introductions by Arthur Waugh (1866-1943), literary critic and father of Evelyn Waugh. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1902-1905. The individual volumes are variously dated: five undated, three 1902, eight 1903, two 1904 and one 1905. A very good set of hardbacks, uniformly bound in three-quarter dark green calf over green cloth boards, with gilt-lined borders. The spines have uniformly sunned to an attractive brown, retaining their gilt-tooled compartments and lettering. Covers with some scuffing and shelf wear commensurate with age. The marbled endpapers are split along the front inner hinges of the majority of volumes, with the binding cords visible, and a lesser number of rear inner hinges are similarly affected. Despite this, the bindings remain sound and secure, with all boards firmly attached. With swirled marbled endpapers, with some offsetting opposite leather turn-ins. Text is generally bright and clean with some toning/usage marks to vertical edge of text block. Top edges gilt, and still shiny and bright. Occasional minor page flaw. With attractive illustrations. A handsome and imposing set of Dickens, presenting particularly well on the shelf. Dimensions: each volume approximately: 226mm high x 152mm wide x 32mm deep. Weight: approximately 17kg (the set - unpacked). PLEASE NOTE: No extra postage required other than that shown, for UK orders. Elsewhere, please check with us first - there may be extra postage required due to size and weight of this set. George Cruikshank and Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), together with George Cattermole, Marcus Stone, Luke Fildes, John Leech, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Richard Doyle, Frederick Walker and others. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. This book is in Very Good+ condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have light bumping, rubbing and beginning fraying. There is some light rubbing to the spine joints as well. The text pages are clean and bright. "Published for the Benefit of the Youth's Directory" "The Youths' Directory is a temporary home for friendless and abused boys between the ages of 7 and 14 years. It was founded on Howard street, near Third, in 1886. One year later Rev. D. C. Crowley took charge and soon secured the necessary funds with which to erect a four-story building on a lot situated between Seventeenth and Eighteenth streets on Howard. Many merchants and professional men will attest as to the character of the boys they are fortunate enough in securing from the directory. The fact that they are not permitted to go out at night makes them in great demand. This applies to the free employment bureau connected with the institution, through which many boys up to 16 years of age secure positions during the year. " (from Wikipedia).…

Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Magazine. 74pp. Tape bound stiff wrap with a tiny nick on the front wrap, still fine. This literary magazine features the first published appearance of Neal Cassady's "The First Third," which inspired Jack Kerouac's *On The Road*. This 5,000 word excerpt is taken from the 13,000-word "Joan Anderson Letter" sent to Kerouac by Cassady, then subsequently passed on to Allen Ginsberg, and then poet and Ace Books rep, Gerd Stein, who according to legend, lost the original off the side of his house boat. The letter was long thought to be lost, but was rediscovered recently. The surviving portion, printed here, was likely copied by Kerouac himself shortly before he started work on his now classic novel. Following the excerpt is Kerouac's reply letter to Cassady, a gushing letter of praise in which he say Cassady has overshadowed the best writers of the day. "The First Third" was used as the basis for the 1997 film, *The Last Time I Committed Suicide* starring Thomas Janes and Keanu Reeves. The magazine also includes contributions from Charles Bukowski, Kenneth Patchen, Anselm Hollo, Kirby Doyle, John Rechy, Lenore Kandel, David Meltzer, Bob Kaufman, and Grover Lewis.…
