Originally published in the U.K. by Chatto & Windus (1983) as the two-volume Complete Poems and Fragments; this Norton issue represents the first authorized single-volume edition available in America. Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) was an English poet and soldier whose firsthand experience in the trenches of the First World War transformed his writing into a powerful critique of patriotic myth and military brutality. Killed in action one week before the Armistice, Owen left behind a small but profoundly influential body of work, including 'Anthem for Doomed Youth,' 'Dulce et Decorum Est,' and 'Strange Meeting.' His poetry, marked by compassion, realism, and technical mastery, cemented his reputation as the foremost voice of the Great War generation. Jon Stallworthy (1935-2014) was a British poet, critic, and Oxford professor whose biographical and editorial work on Owen, including Wilfred Owen: The War Poems and the Man and Complete Poems and Fragments, established the modern textual standard for Owen scholarship.
