Thomas Turner (9 June 1729 - 6 February 1793) was a shopkeeper in East Hoathly, Sussex, England. He is now most widely known for this diary. Turner kept a diary for eleven years of his life, the first surviving entry of which is 21 February 1754. The diary served a number of purposes, including as an accounting book, a record of legal and property dealings, a place for religious reflection and as a means of describing Turner's everyday life. The failure of his marriage to live up to Turner's expectations is a frequent cause of his low mood in the diary's entries. The diary has never been published in full. David Vaisey's edition retains about one third of its content. The edition also includes a family tree, short biographies of the diary's major characters and a list of Turner's reading material mentioned in Vaisey's extracts. The periodical Sussex Archaeological Collections printed some excerpts from the diary in 1859. Ref ZZ 3.

In the eleven years of his diary, he recorded the minutiae of everyday village life in pre-industrial England. This edition contains about a third of the massive whole of the diary, but allows Turner to take his rightful place alongside Pepys, Evelyn, and Woodforde as an indispensable English diarist. Slip case, and contents all near fine. *The man who wrote the diary had his shop in East Hoathley in Sussex and its trivialities that kept its secret for so long as it was deemed in parts to have little merit, now in the modern world those trivialities are deemed its essence and a glimpse into the life in an 18th century shopkeeper and his customers, family and friends.

Book in very good condition, in a similar unclipped dust jacket. The book has very minor bumping to the spine ends. The dust jacket shows a little general shelf wear, with minor spotting to the end flaps. Overall a very good, tight and clean copy. (See pictures). The book is signed by the editor to the title page. To the inside front page, the editor has also inscribed: "For Mum and Dad with love David", with the date "15 xii 1984". The editor, at the time of publication, was the Keeper of Western Manuscripts at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and a Professorial Fellow of Exeter College. The book details the life of Thomas Turner (1729-93), a hard-working and ingenious village shopkeeper in Easy Hoathly, Sussex. Signed.

It was reissued by CTR with a few revisions in 1994 . This Folio edition is based on the 1994 reissue with further emendations. the boards with their half bound blue cloth spine and marbled effect covers are square and tight as is the binding, the text block is bright and clean with black and white engravings. The cardboard slipcase is covered in maroon paper is also very good. Book price includes 2nd class parcel postage in UK only.
