Paperback. Condizione: Fine. 1st. 86 pages, illustrations; 30 cm. A special issue of Aperture, no. 161 (Winter 2000). Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "This publication focuses on Talbot's ambitions for the mystical blend of science and art he termed 'photogenic drawing' (later called 'photography'), as outlined in his classic volume The Pencil of Nature. In addition to familiar icons from photography's beginnings, such as Talbot's cameraless photograms of plant forms and lace, and his photographs of Lacock Abbey, the twelfth-century stone building in which he lived and worked, many unseen and little-known experiments with calotypes will be featured in this invaluable new volume on the life and work of Talbot. Lively and insightful texts offer new critical perspectives on Talbot's significance in the history of image-making, the illustrated book, and the history of ideas." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Condizione sovraccoperta: dj. First Edition. 375pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Dark blue cloth. Very good/Very good. Minor moisture stain to jacket's rear panel. Does not affect boards. Inscribed by the editor on the front free endsheet. Edited and with an introduction by Brigham D. Madsen. Biographical sketch by Sterling MCMurrin. This work contains three lengthy and previously unpublished essays by B.H. Roberts on the Book of Mormon, including his work comparing the Book of Mormon with Ethan Smith's 'View of the Hebrews.' An excellent work from 'The Defender of the Faith.' Brigham H. Roberts (1857-1933) was one of the seven presidents of the First Council of the Seventy. A voluminous writer, he is perhaps best known for his outstanding A Comprehensive History of the Church, a major landmark in LDS historical writing from which this selection has been gleaned. Born in England, he was baptized in Utah in 1867, following his emigration. He graduated from the University of Deseret in 1878, taught school, and gradually drifted into journalism. He filled missions in Tennessee (1880-82), in the southern states (1883-86), and in England (1886-88). In 1888 he was called to the First Council of the Seventy; in 1889 he spent four months in prison for "unlawful cohabitation." Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Roberts was denied his seat because of his polygamist beliefs. His histories and biographies and treatises remain among the important works of Mormon literature. Signed.

First Edition. 607pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Green cloth with the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. Very good/ Near fine. Jacket shows minor rubbing at extremiting with a closed tear and crease to the head of the front panel, and a closed tear and crease to the rear panel. This is Roberts' Magnum Opus published more than six decades after its completion. "B.H. Roberts considered 'The Truth, The Way, The Life' to be the most important work he had written. While people may differ with him on that judgment, this ambitious treatise deserves to be published. True, many of the ideas discussed by Roberts are now outdated, many have radically changed, and many new concepts have arisen in the sixty-six years since this work was written - but still this effort shows a great mind grappling with great issues." - Leonard Arrington. "Le Duchat's is the first of the critical editions. It takes account of differences in the texts, and begins to point out the variations. His very numerous notes are remarkable, and are still worthy of most serious consideration. He was the first to offer useful elucidations, and these have been repeated after him, and with good reason will continue to be so. Le Duchat's commentary was translated into English by John Ozell for his 1737 edition of Gargantua and Pantagruel." (For more information, see: Rabelais, François (ca. 1483-1553), The Works of Francis Rabelais. Translated from the French by Sir Thomas Urquhart and Motteux; with explanatory notes, by Duchat, Ozell, and Others. Volume I [Books 1, 2, and 3 to Chapter 13]. Thomas Urquhart and Peter Motteux, translators. London: H. G. Bohn, 1851. Introduction).
