A reprint of this work of 1708, originally subtitled An Historical Review of the Stage. It covers the history of the London stage from the end of the Commonwealth period through the flourishing of Restoration drama to the year 1706, including a list of the players at Drury Lane. John Downes the author, was a prompter and bookkeeper at the Theatre in Lincolns Inn Fields from its opening in 1662, continuing until 1706. With extensive explanatory notes at the end, it was edited by Montague Summers (1880-1948), author and clergyman, who wrote on witchcraft and the occult in addition to his interest in seventeenth century drama. The Fortune Press was founded by R. A. Caton (1892-1971) in 1924 and continued into the post-war years, publishing some of the early works of Philip Larkin. POETRY THEATRE LIT. Each volume has long been protected by a homemade clear plastic dust jacket -- all of which have done their job well resulting in NO fraying and almost NO rubbing. PLEASE NOTE: Vertical white lines in the photos are light reflected from the clear plastic dust jackets, NOTon the books themselves. There are faint shadows at the corners of the front free endpapers from tape adhesive offset (minor -- see photo). Otherwise all pages are fresh, crisp and unmarked -- uncut and unopened, apparently never read. NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. Each volume measures 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall. This is number 457 of 750 standard sets (another 50 having been being printed on Van Gelder paper).
