A reprint of this work of 1708, originally subtitled An Historical Review of the Stage. It covers the history of the London stage from the end of the Commonwealth period through the flourishing of Restoration drama to the year 1706, including a list of the players at Drury Lane. John Downes the author, was a prompter and bookkeeper at the Theatre in Lincolns Inn Fields from its opening in 1662, continuing until 1706. With extensive explanatory notes at the end, it was edited by Montague Summers (1880-1948), author and clergyman, who wrote on witchcraft and the occult in addition to his interest in seventeenth century drama. The Fortune Press was founded by R. A. Caton (1892-1971) in 1924 and continued into the post-war years, publishing some of the early works of Philip Larkin. POETRY THEATRE LIT. Appears unread. Bright, clean, square, and tight. Sharp corners. Inner hinges are perfect. Uniformly bound in the original attractive marbled boards with green cl…oth spines stamped in shiny gold. Spines are still a pleasing green -- only very slightly sun-faded (see photo) -- much less than usual for this set which is often seen with spines sunned to an ugly brown. Each volume has long been protected by a homemade clear plastic dust jacket -- all of which have done their job well resulting in NO fraying and almost NO rubbing. PLEASE NOTE: Vertical white lines in the photos are light reflected from the clear plastic dust jackets, NOTon the books themselves. There are faint shadows at the corners of the front free endpapers from tape adhesive offset (minor -- see photo). Otherwise all pages are fresh, crisp and unmarked -- uncut and unopened, apparently never read. NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. Each volume measures 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall. This is number 457 of 750 standard sets (another 50 having been being printed on Van Gelder paper). Volumes I-II were published in 1931; Volumes III-VI in 1932. cxxxvi, 460pp; [iv], 532pp; [iv], 595pp; [iv], 603pp; [iv], 545pp; [iv], 594pp. Edited, and with notes by Montague Summers. Limited private press edition of Gothic novel by Charlotte Dacre (nee King) (c.1780?-1825), who wrote under the pseudonym, Rosa Matilda and first published in 1806. The work was considered provocative at the time for its racial and religious overtones and strong sexually aggressive female characters. Edited by Montague Summers (1880-1948), who was ordained a deacon in the Church of England, but converted to Catholicism, although never officially holding office in the church. He pursued a career of teaching and literary scholarship, publishing on occult subjects and witchcraft and editing works of Gothic fiction like this title. Fortune Press was founded by Reginald Ashley Caton (1897-1971) in 1924, originally specialising in gay erotica before widening its scope. FICTION GOTHIC LIT.
