The dustjacket has some edgewear with a couple of short vertical closed tears along the top edge. The outside of the dustjacket also has some light soiling & 1 vertical crease at the back board. Presumed first edition thus, in two volumes. xlvii, 863pp.; xii, 857pp. There is a tissue-guarded frontispiece in both volumes. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was a famous English essayist, possibly best remembered today for his Tales From Shakespeare written with his sister, Mary (1764-1847). This edition of their collected works contains (1) all that has been recovered hitherto of their literary prose, (2) the plays, dramatic fragments, prologues, and epilogues by Charles - saving a few relatively unimportant pieces excluded on the score of copyright - (3) the body of his and Mary's verse. There is also an Editor's Preface, bibliographical list, and account of the growth of the body of collected works. The books are uniformly bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling and blind-stamped designs on the spines and front board and a circular blind-stamped design on the rear boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and fading to the spines. The spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spines and bottom of the spine of volume 2. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavyish set and extra postage may be required for delivery outside the UK.
