Simon Van Der Stel was appointed Commander at the Cape of Good Hope in 1679. His manuscript recording his expedition to the Copper Mountains of Namaqualand was lost until rediscovered by the editor in 1922 being part of the Fagel Collection acquired by Trinity College Dublin. Most of the plates illustrated natural history subjects.
