Softcover. Condizione: Good. Some underlining and margin notes. The theoretical ferment which has affected literary studies over the last decade has called into question traditional ways of thinking about, classifying and interpreting texts. Shakespeare has been not just the focus of a variety of divergent critical movements within recent years, but also increasingly the locus of emerging debates within, and with, theory itself. This collection of essays, written by distinguished and powerful critics in the fields of literary theory and Shakespeare studies, is intended both for those interested in Shakespeare and for those interested more generally in the emerging debates within contemporary criticism and theory.…

Aggiungi al carrelloDigest. Condizione: Good+. First Edition, 1st Printing. A nice copy of the Winter 1950 issue of the British science fiction magazine Science-Fantasy. This issue was the the second and last publication under the editorship of Walter Gillings. Science-Fantasy was published during the 1950s to accompany New Worlds magazine. In the late 1940s, Gillings had produced three volumes of his first science fiction venture "Fantasy" before it failed. As a result, he was left with a substantial amount of stories purchased with the intention of publication. In 1950, Nova brought on Gillings as its editor of their new magazine, Science-Fantasy. With him came the inventory of stories from "Fantasy." After only two issues (Summer and Winter 1950) Gillings was replaced by New Worlds editor John Carnell. This copy is in remarkable condition for its age and scarcity. Cover's have some light wear and the staples have corroded over time leaving its stain on the inner margins. A soft vertical crease permeates most of the 96 numbered pages paginated [i: inner cover advertisements], [1], 2-96, [97: inner back cover advertisement for the Fantasy Book Centre]. Binding is solid with no loose pages. Pages are clean and unmarked. A good+ copy that beats many seen recently come to market. Powell, Turner, and Ernst (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. The format is approximately 5.5 inches by 8.25 inches. The dust jacket is price clipped. Some edge soiling. Slip "With the Compliments of Professor W. Macneile Dixon (University of Glasgow): laid in. Footnotes. House of Canmore genealogy. Maps. Tabular Data. Introduction to the Second Edition. A Note on Scottish Currency. Suggestions for Further Reading. Index. It is the hope of the revisers that they have combined piety with discrimination in a way which enhances the great merit of this well-known book. John Duncan Mackie CBE MC (18871978) was a distinguished Scottish historian who wrote a one-volume history of Scotland and several works on early modern Scotland. He was Professor of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow from 1930 to 1957. In 1957 he retired, and was appointed Historiographer Royal for Scotland. Bruce P. Lenman is Emeritus Professor of Modern History at the University of St. Andrews and an Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee. Noel Geoffrey Parker FRHistS FBA (born 25 December 1943) is an English historian specializing in the history of Western Europe, Spain, and warfare during the early modern era. His best known book is The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 15001800. He holds his BA, MA, Ph.D., and LittD degrees from Cambridge University. Parker has taught at the University of Illinois, the University of St Andrews, and Yale University. He is currently the Andreas Dorpalen Professor of History at the Ohio State University. "Comprehensive, thoroughly indexed, and full of learning."--The Times Educational Supplement. A history that is equally entertaining and enlightening, illustrating all of the changes of power and intricacies that are necessary to understand the interrelation between England and Scotland and the Highland and Lowland populations. It shows how Duncan (1034-40) emerged from 'the union of the four peoples' as the first king of a united Scotland and provides detailed, reign-by-reign accounts from then on. Above all Professor Mackie reveals how the Scots long pursued an independent line - in religion, law, culture and foreign policy - that helped them keep at bay the Romans, the French and the English. Second Edition [Revised]. Third printing [stated].…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. The Cambridge Illustrated History of Warfare provides a unique account of Western warfare from antiquity to the present day. The book treats the history of all aspects of the subject: the development of warfare on land, sea and air; weapons and technology; strategy and defence; discipline and intelligence; mercenaries and standing armies; cavalry and infantry; chivalry and blitzkrieg; guerrilla assault and nuclear arsenals. It places in context particular key events in the history of armed engagement, from the Greek victory at Marathon, through the introduction of gunpowder in medieval England and France, to the jungle warfare of Vietnam and the strategic air attacks of the Gulf War. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the socio-economic aspects of military progress: who pays for it, how can its returns be measured, and to what extent does it explain the rise of the West to global dominance over two millennia? 352 pages. Light foxing to top of page edges. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: History; History; War. ISBN: 0521440734. ISBN/EAN: 9780521440738. Inventory No: 278759.
