Hardcover. Condizione: Fine condition. NOT a library discard (illustratore). First Edition. Ames, Iowa: Iowa State University / Earthworks Engineering Research Center, 2008. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by R. L. Handy, directly on the front free endpaper. The inscription is to CCEE Hall of Fame Inductee, Nathaniel S. Fox, "a great friend and unique innovator." For more about Fox, see below. Fine condition (cover only very lightly rubbed). NO chips, tears, or fading. Square and tight. Hinges are perfect. NOT a library discard. NOT a remainder. Pages are crisp, clean and unmarked but for where Nathaniel S. Fox has underlined his name as co-author of several items in the complete list of R. L. Handy's publications and patents (pp. vii - xv). Bound in the original green laminated boards. "Nathaniel Fox's journey at Iowa State began after receiving his bachelor's at United States Military Academy, West Point; he chose the Army-approved master's program of civil engineering with a minor in nuclear engineering at Iowa State because he wanted to invent something someday-and he did. Fox's master's thesis was on a new soil test, and with some revisions and redesigns, it is now manufactured in Iowa and has gained international recognition and acceptance. After his master's, the Army approved a Ph.D. in civil engineering, and he continued his soil testing. After graduation, Fox volunteered for active duty in Vietnam. After his active duty, he received a Bronze Star for Valor and a Military Merit Medal from the South Vietnamese Army. He returned home and received requests from the Vietnamese government to teach them how to build "American Roads." Their request was due to the roads built by the United States military lasting for a long time. Fox agreed and brought the chief geotechnical engineer and Vietnamese graduate students to Iowa State to learn about road construction. Fox resigned from the Army and started Soil Systems Incorporated. Five years later, his company was listed in Engineering News Record's Top 500 Engineering Firms. In addition, he was named Engineer of the Year in private practice in Georgia in 1979 and has won many other prestigious awards. One of his most recognized inventions is the ground-improvement system, Geopier, and he founded the Geopier Foundation Company. Geopier is used to support windmills, buildings and earth embankments on soft soil." from the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) website. Fox is a CCEE Hall of Fame Inductee. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by R. L. Handy. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/No dust jacket, as issued. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xvii, 354pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Cloth. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: fine. Typed preface by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower for One Heartbeat Away: Presidential Disability and Succession by Senator Birch Bayh. Preface is signed by Eisenhower, with handwritten notes by the editor. Includes copy of the book. (illustratore). First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, ix, [3], 372pp. Red cloth, title stamped on spine. Stated "first printing" on copyright page. This copy is unread. In the publisher's fine dust jacket. Book and documents housed in custom blue cloth clamshell case, title in gilt on spine, in fine condition. Includes a three-page typed preface by former President Eisenhower, stapled at top left corner, numerous editorial notes in pencil, signed by Eisenhower in black pen on the last page. Provenance: RR Auction of Amherst, NH, purchased in 2022. ".because this possible peril existed, Vice President Nixon and I, in consultation with the Attorney General, prior to my 1956 operation, reduced to memorandum form our understanding as to what would be the Vice President's role in the event of a Presidential disability." - former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution clarifies the presidential line of succession and eliminates ambiguity about the role of the Vice President. As President Eisenhower noted in his preface, his signed agreement with Vice President Nixon did not have the legal authority to make Nixon the president if Eisenhower had become incapacitated during his surgeries. The death of President Kennedy brought new focus on the presidential line of succession, with legislation for the Twenty-fifth Amendment proposed by Senator Bayh in 1965 and ratified by the states in 1967. Signed.
