Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Minus. Reprint. This Literary Guild of America reprint edition was published in the same year as the 1st Edition. This copy is almost 100 years old, has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club editions. The buckram covered boards, high quality paper and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid, clean and square. Pictorial endpapers are clear of markings with small previous owner's bookplate under front flap. Spine tight, boards rigid and tips pointed. Slight push to spine ends. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in very good minus condition and has some closed tearing along backstrip seams and chipping/loss at spine ends and some edges. It looks sleek in a shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. "Good" original jacket shows some chipping to top of spine and is missing a small, 5/8ths inch X inch-and-a-half (16 X 38 mm.) horizontal strip from top of jacket rear panel near the spine (just touching the "R" of "Fokker.") Not price clipped; original $3.00 price showing. Oddly, a preliminary page here, stating "Two hundred and fifteen copies of this special edition of 'Flying Dutchman' have been printed and bound and have been signed by Anthony H.G. Fokker. Of these, none is for sale," is hand-numbered "124" -- yet we can find NO author signature in this copy. Fokker's synchronized machine gun allowed pilots to shoot safely between their own propeller blades. Before the World War Russia, Italy, Holland and England all turned down his "inherently stable" monoplane. Two years later, England offered 2 million pounds to anyone who could come up with something to defeat Fokker's deadly triplane, his speedy D-7 biplane, and finally his sleek D-8 monoplane, called by English pilots "the flying razor." They should have listened. "It was not until I had invented the synchronized machine gun shooting through the propeller that war in the air became the deadly combat which developed the race of heroic airmen the world knows and honors," writes Mr. Fokker. It's sobering to note that, in Europe and North America a full century later, no private designer would likely be able to legally lay hands on a machine gun with which to develop any equivalent innovation. In the event, Fokker's welded steel airplanes were so far ahead of their time that the German government ordered his competitors to manufacture Fokker's designs on a royalty basis, while the British started calling their own plummeting planes "Fokker fodder," with Parliament asking why their own forces had not contracted to buy this Dutchman's designs. In 1926, when Commander Byrd overflew the North Pole, he did so . . . in a Fokker Tri-motor. An uncommon first edition in original jacket. 282 pp. Now reduced from $700. Dust jacket illustration by Carroll Shell / glossy B&W plates (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: New, in shrinkwrap. Condizione sovraccoperta: No dust jacket present. Presumed First Edition, First Printing. 389 pages. New; still in plastic wrap. Dark brown cloth covered boards with gold gilt text and decoration on the spine and boards and gilt-topped page edges. Without a dust jacket as issued. This is number 91 in the Lakeside Classic series, which started in 1904. Black and white illustrations throughout. This book pairs the memoirs of James Wilson Marshall and Edward Gould Buffum, detailing the transition of California from Mexican territory into a booming frontier. James Wilson Marshall (October 8, 1810 - August 10, 1885) was an American carpenter and sawmill operator, who on January 24, 1848, reported the finding of gold at Coloma, California, a settlement on the American River about 36 miles northeast of Sacramento. His discovery was the impetus for the California gold rush. The mill was owned by Johann (John) Sutter who employed Marshall to build his mill. Edward Gould Buffum (1820-1867) was a soldier and journalist. When the Mexican-American War began in 1846, Buffum moved to California with his regiment. He was a lieutenant of the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers. After his 1848 discharge, he remained in California. His experiences were published in Six Months in the Gold Mine. He continued his journalism career and he became a special correspondent for the Herald. James Wilson Marshall's account focuses heavily on the events surrounding the 1848 discovery of gold in California, and the resulting economic upheaval. Edward Gould Buffum's memoir offers a perspective of a pioneer and journalist, detailing the end of the Mexican-American War and life in the mining camps. R. R. Donnelly: A volume of The Lakeside Classics series has been published annually since 1903 as a holiday gift to employees, customers and friends of R. R. Donnelley. According to company folklore, in 1902, T.E. Donnelley, son of the founder and president of RR Donnelley & Sons Company, received a set of straight-razors as a Christmas gift. Its special appeal was that the blades were a product directly associated with the donor's cutlery business, not the type of frivolous and gaudy item that was the common business gift at the time. T.E. thought it would be a fine thing if his company could provide something of a similar nature. The project took root and by Christmas, 1903, the first Lakeside Classic, "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin", had been selected, designed, edited, printed, and was ready to ship. The basic format of the Lakeside Classics has remained the same for more than 100 years, testifying to the sound design of the first volume. Each 25 years the cover material is changed and type style adjusted to keep pace with current developments in fine book making. Production methods are updated as book manufacturing improvements are introduced. Current editions use electronic page composition, digital scanning and state-of-the-art computer-to-plate technologies. The small, pocketbook size, format was intended for convenience. The book was bound in a plain dark-green cloth cover. It was stamped, in real gold that also adorned the top-edge, with the R. R. Donnelley Indianhead logo that had been created by Chicagoan Joseph Leyendecker. Many of the early volumes consisted of the speeches and writings of noted Americans. With the publication in 1911 of "The Autobiography of Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard", the series took its present character: first-person narratives of American history, usually taken from books long out of print and not easily obtainable. Through the 1980s, the volumes emphasized history on the North American continent, including titles on the Civil War, the American Old West, early exploration and everyday frontier life. During the 1990s, as the company extended its business internationally, the series was expanded to include narratives by Americans with experiences beyond our borders. The Classics have benefited from of a line of distinguished historians and university professors and directors of well-known historical societies who have served as editors. The Lakeside Classics are never sold by the company, but some find their way into the rare book market. A few volumes have become so extremely rare that collectors who own a complete set usually consider themselves most fortunate.…
