"Once committed to paper, a woman's portrait could be used by anyone for any purpose. It could be bought or sold, displayed, defaced, derided or adored. It entered the public domain - much like an actress or a fallen woman. As women were for possessing, so too were their images".…

Aggiungi al carrelloClarendon's Monumental History of the English Civil War Extra-Illustrated with 224 Engraved Portraits Eight Volumes Handsomely Bound by Bayntun CLARENDON, Edward Hyde, Earl of. The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England. To Which is Added an Historical View of the Affairs of Ireland. A New Edition, Exhibiting a Faithful Collation of the Original MS., with All the Suppressed Passages; Also the Unpublished Notes of Bishop Warburton. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1826. Eight octavo volumes (8 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches; 217 x 134 mm.). A remarkable extra-illustrated set, greatly enlarged by the insertion of 224 engraved portraits of monarchs, statesmen, soldiers, churchmen, courtiers, and other historical figures associated with Clarendon's narrative, many of the portraits inlaid or mounted to size. The extensive series of added portraits includes representations of many of the principal personalities of Tudor and Stuart England and of the Civil War period, among them Mary, Queen of Scots; Henry VIII; Edward IV; James I; William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke; Sir Thomas Coventry, Lord Keeper; and Francis Russell, Earl of Bedford. The portraits comprise engravings of various periods and sizes, selected from numerous sources and carefully incorporated into the volumes, transforming the set into an extensive pictorial gallery of the personalities surrounding the English Civil Wars. Handsomely bound by Bayntun of Bath, ca. 1910, in three-quarter brown crushed morocco over brown cloth boards, ruled in gilt; spines with five raised bands, decoratively ruled and tooled in gilt in compartments, lettered in gilt, with volume numbers and "EXTRA ILLUSTRATED / 1826" at foot; marbled endpapers; top edges gilt. Some light rubbing and minor wear to extremities, but an attractive and imposing set. Edward HYDE, first Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was one of the principal royalist statesmen of the seventeenth century. A close adviser to Charles I and subsequently to the future Charles II during his exile, Hyde returned to England at the Restoration and served as Lord Chancellor until his political downfall in 1667. He spent his remaining years in France, where he continued work upon the history for which he is chiefly remembered. Clarendon's History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, first published at Oxford in 1702-1704, remains one of the great contemporary accounts of the English Civil War. Written by a participant who knew many of its leading personalities personally, the work combines political and historical narrative with the penetrating character studies for which Clarendon became celebrated. The present 1826 Clarendon Press edition is of particular importance for restoring material absent from the early editions. As its title announces, it was prepared from a collation with the original manuscript and incorporates suppressed passages together with the previously unpublished notes of Bishop William Warburton. The extra-illustration of books - sometimes known as "Grangerizing" - reached its greatest popularity among nineteenth- and early twentieth-century collectors, who expanded important historical and biographical works by inserting portraits, views, documents, and other material relating to the text. Particularly ambitious examples could require rebinding in several volumes to accommodate the added material. With no fewer than 224 additional engraved portraits distributed throughout its eight volumes, the present copy is an unusually extensive example of the practice. The portraits materially enhance Clarendon's celebrated character studies, turning his history into both a narrative of the Civil War and a substantial visual record of the men and women who inhabited its political world. A handsome, extensively extra-illustrated copy of one of the great contemporary histories of seventeenth-century England, in an attractive eight-volume Bayntun binding.…
