Hardcover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. A like new copy of this quite fabulous 1970 Folio Society publication in a like new slipcase. No discernible faults to book or case other than an official Folio Society bookplate attached to a front end paper. 1st edition (thus - there was a 1955 Folio edition but it w…as designed differently to this one) 1st printing. The type wore thin on later printings (see Folio 60 bibliography). Bound in full red cloth blocked overall with a lovely Persian design in gold and silver. Printed end papers. Gold drop-box (not the slipcase of later printings). 5 plates printed in brown and black. 32 unnumbered pages. 8vo - 220mm x 140mm, 9 x 5 inches. Folio Society number 287. Omar Khayyam (1048 - 1131) was called the 'Astronomer Poet of Persia & his works were first translated into English by Edward FitzGerald in 1859, after finding the Persian manuscript in the Bodleian. This edition uses that translation. Drawings by Virgil Burnett. Design by Madeline Dinkel. A charming and beautiful Folio production. Not paginated but the poem runs to the full 75 quatrains.
