Octavo, red buckram (hardcover), gilt letters and decoration to upper cover, portrait frontis., top edge gilt, xli, 214 pp. Very Good, with sunned spine and light foxing (age darkened spotting) to page edges. From Preface: It may be of service to the reader to explain the arrangement of this volume. In the Introduction which precedes the Autobiography, I have attempted -- firstly, to describe Lord Herbert's varied character, as displayed in his own writings and historical records; and secondly, to review his eminent achievements in literature and philosophy, of which he himself has given no account. In the essay which succeeds the Autobiography, I have tried to trace his political career in detail from 1624 -- the year when his own memoirs abruptly terminate -- to 1648, the date of his death. In an appendix I have printed several original illustrative documents, many extracts from Herbert's unpublished correspondence, and some historical notes on topics to which frequent allusion is made in the Autobiography on the assumption -- no longer justifiable -- that they are matters of common knowledge. Former editors have treated the work as a mere curiosity of literature. I have endeavored in my notes and elsewhere to prove that it deserves the serious attention of the student, not only of English literature, but of English social history in the early seventeenth century. My text is that of the first printed edition issued from Horace Walpole's private press in 1764. I differ from that text alone in my treatment of proper names. Soon after I had set myself the task of identifying the persons mentioned by Lord Herbert, I came to the conclusion that the names had very often been wrongly transcribed and my notes will, I trust, justify the changes I have made. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Autobiography (Written by HIMSELF) with dedication by Horace Walpole. This is a second edition printed for use by the public in general. The first edition was printed in 1764 for private use. Carefully curated publication with folding frontispiece - a b/w engraving of a reclining Lord Herbert in a rural setting. In this pose one can see his impresa shield with the motto: Magica Sympathiae. Brown leather boards and spine; with red title label towards the head of the latter. Stained top edge and gilt (gold) decorative markings along the boards' perimeters. Condition (external): boards are faded and rubbed in places; with bent corners. The front board/spine hinge is a little loose without being detached. Condition (internal): as before - front pastedown/ffep slightly loose. The main condition-related aspect of the text block is the level of tanning (with occasional spotting); especially on the preliminary and final pages. In particular, see the images of the contents pages and frontispiece. Also, note that there is a ex-libris note on the front pastedown plus a just visible signature on the contents page (in faded brown ink). pp. 173, preceded by an unpaginated dedication and 'Advertisement' which reads like an introduction/preface by another author (unacknowledged). 8vo. Please note that, depending on destination, we may request an additional payment to cover any extra shipping/postage charges. Proceeds to Amnesty International. Abe2346.
