"Lord Thurlow returns his thanks to Mr Triphook for his obliging note; and purposes to have the pleasure of calling upon him tomorrow. Lord Thurlow especially wishes to retain the Prayer Book of Mr Evelyn, valuing it highly. He has marked 4 ["3" excised] books in this day's sale; & requests Mr Triphook will be so good as to purchase them for him. [postscript] Ld T wd be much obliged to Mr Triphook if he cd obtain for him a copy of ye Histy of Dunwich[.]" WITH: manuscript, one page, 8vo, Thurlow's hand, as follows: "The Flower And The Leaf, After/ Geoffrey Chaucer, / By/ Edward Hovel Thurlow,/ Lord Thurlow // London/ &c". Condizione: Good. - An autograph document penned in an unknown hand on 1-7/8 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide parchment paper with clipped corners. A bankruptcy document dated "21st April 1789" reading "Let a Commission issue as prayed and be directed to Samuel Buck Nicholas Smith Esquires Thomas Bolland Charles Coupland and James Nixon Gentlemen", signed "Thurlow" by the British attorney and Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. Closely cropped with a partial line of text along the top edge. Once likely mounted in an album, there is some soiling with offsetting to the edges of the document from the glue which adhered to the verso. Good. The British lawyer and Tory politician Edward Thurlow, 1st Baron Thurlow (1731-1806) served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain from 1778 to 1792. After practicing law, Thurlow had turned to politics in 1768 and was elected Member of Parliament for Tamworth. Appointed Solicitor-General two years later, he was promoted to Attorney General in 1772. He ardently opposed American independence. He was defeated in his attempt to indict the publisher of the "Letters of Junius" Henry Sampson Woodfall for seditious libel when Lord Mansfield issued a verdict of mistrial. Appointed Lord Chancellor by Lord North and he retained the position through the governments led by Lord Rockingham, Lord Shelburne, and subsequently William Pitt the Younger. While in office, he opposed the economic and constitutional reforms proposed by Edmund Burke and John Dunning.…

Small 8vo. pp 8, folded. Unbound as leaflet. A mid 19th century pamphlet. No publisher, author, date or place of publication is given. WorldCat notes that there is a copy in the Goldsmiths' Kress Library of Economic Literature, (no. 34328) and says the author was probably Lord Thurlow - a Suffolk peer (Edward Hovell-Thurlow) and estimates a publication date of 1845. Evidently Suffolk was plagued by arson at this time. An impassioned plea, unashamedly patrician in tone, to stop this outbreak. It appears to be addressed mainly to farm workers and may have been spoken to a gathering and/or published in local newspapers.
