Hard Back / Cloth Binding. Condizione: Good Clean Cond. No Dust Jacket. Hardback : hard cover edition in good plus condition, a typical used book with slight wear to edges and spine. Some minor bumping or scuffs. Overall good / nice copy of this scarce title. Excellent reading on the subject. A good book to enjoy and keep on hand for yourself. Or would make an ideal gift for the fan / reader in your life. Reading is one of the great pleasures in life. Reading is one of the great pleasures in life. About the author: Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie, 17 January 1883 to 30 November 1972 was a writer and a Scottish nationalist. Compton Mackenzie was born in West Hartlepool, England, into a theatrical family of Mackenzies, but many of whose members used Compton as their stage surname, starting with his grandfather Henry Compton, a well-known Shakespearean actor of the Victorian era. His father, Edward Compton, was an actor and theatre company manager; his sister, Fay Compton, starred in many of J. M. Barrie's plays, including Peter Pan. He was educated at St Paul's School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he graduated with a degree in modern history. Sir Compton Mackenzie is perhaps best known for two comedies set in Scotland, the Hebridean Whisky Galore (1947) and the Highland The Monarch of the Glen (1941), sources of a successful film and a television series respectively. He published almost a hundred books on different subjects, including ten volumes of autobiography, My Life and Times (1963-1971). He also wrote history (on Marathon and Salamis), biography (Roosevelt), literary criticism, satires, apologia (Sublime Tobacco 1957), children's stories, poetry, and so on. Of his fiction, The Four Winds Of Love is considered to be his magnum opus. It is described by Dr John MacInnes (formerly of the School of Scottish Studies) as one of the greatest works of English literature produced in the twentieth century. He was an influence on the young F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose first book, This Side of Paradise, was written while under his spell. Sinister Street, his lengthy 1913-14 bildungsroman, influenced the young and impressed established writers. Against the rules, George Orwell and Cyril Connolly read it as schoolboys. Max Beerbohm praised Mackenzie's writing for vividness and emotional reality[4] Frank Swinnerton, literary critic, comments on Mackenzie's detail and wealth of reference . John Betjeman said of it, 'This has always seemed to me one of the best novels of the best period in English novel writing.' Henry James thought it to be the most remarkable book written by a young author in his lifetime. Following his conversion to Catholicism in 1914, he explored religious themes in a trilogy of novels, The Altar Steps (1922), The Parson's Progress (1923), and The Heavenly Ladder (1924). Following his time on Capri, socialising with the gay exiles there, he treated the homosexuality of a politician sensitively in Thin Ice (1956). He was the literary critic for the London-based national newspaper Daily Mail. Please send us a note if you have any questions. Thank you. Illus with b/w Photos (illustratore). Book.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First published in 1947, this is a sixth impression of 1950. Top of page block dyed red as issued. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, but overall fabulous jacket very bright and unfaded. Not price clipped (9s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 264pp. It is 1943 and the war has brought rationing to the Hebridean islands of Great and Little Todday. When food is in short supply, it is bad enough, but when the whisky runs out, it looks like the end of the world. Morale is at rock bottom. George Campbell needs a wee dram to give him the courage to stand up to is mother and marry Catriona. The priest, the doctor and, of course, the landlord at the inn are all having a very thin time of it. There's no conversation, no jollity, no fun, until a shipwreck off the coast brings a piece of extraordinary good fortune. Supposedly based on the island of Barra and on a true event, the running aground of the 'SS Politician' (in the book it is called the 'Cabinet Minister'!), this comic, immensely popular novel was made into an Ealing film in 1949, starring Basil Radford, Bruce Seton, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson. It was the directorial debut of Alexander Mackendrick and the screenplay was by Sir Compton Mackenzie (1992-1973). In 2016 it was made into another popular film starring Eddie Izzard (as Captain Waggett), James Cosmo et al. A scarce book. Jacket by Clarke Hutton (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, second impression, published later the same year. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of largely cream jacket and spine, some overall browning and dust staining, corners rubbed with tiny loss, not price clipped (7/6 on spine), small previoud owner;s name to ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 406pp. The year is 1914. The writer Compton Mackenzie is eager to do his duty to his country and join the army. But, suffering with sciatica, he knows he will never pass any medical examination. Disillusioned, he resigns himself to travelling Europe and writing his next book when fate presents an opportunity. He is offered a Staff Job by Sir Ian Hamilton, Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He travels immediately to the coasts of the Aegean. This journey is the beginning of Mackenzie's experience of the First World War, which was to culminate in the epic, harrowing conflict of the Gallipoli Expedition. 'Gallipoli Memories' throws fresh light on many of the more obscure and unknown issues of that campaign. Described masterfully by a writer who found fame with books such as 'Whisky Galore' and 'The Monarch of the Glen', it provides a fascinating account of the battle, and the bravery of the men who fought it. Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie, (1883-1972), was an English born Scottish writer of fiction, biography, histories and a memoir, as well as a cultural commentator, raconteur and lifelong Scottish nationalist. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The three items are in good condition, each with his firm signature 'Compton Mackenzie'. Each is 1p, 4to, in good condition, folded for postage.Despite being scored through, one can see that the first and last salutation are addressed to 'Mrs Raymont', and the second to 'Mr Raymond'. ONE: 23 November 1961. He is pleased that she enjoyed his book 'Mezzotint': 'The setting is really the Seychelles but of course I had to lay it in the South Atlantic instead of the Indian Ocean.' He agrees with her 'about these efforts at modernity by some of my contemporaries. It always reminds me of the efforts of old people to remain young with the help of hair-dyeing etc.' TWO: 6 February 1964. Scarcely more than a note. He remembers 'the Froebel Institute but it was in Margravine Gardens beyond Talgarth Road, I expect the young Irving used to go down to Maraeon from Halsetown'. THREE: 6 September 1965. As a result of her letter he has 'corrected "Heva" and "Bisgon" for a possible second edition'. He reports that he 'had an interesting letter from A. L. Rowse the other day and I was gratified that he passed my Cornwall of nearly sixty years ago as correct'. I almost always make it a rule never to revisit the glimposes of the moon'.…

Mackenzie's letter is 1p., landscape 12mo. 16 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with a crease to one corner. He thanks MP for his 'encouraging letter' and discusses his own 'silly slip about the Faery Queen's entrance' in a radio broadcast: 'I was so much concerned with giving listeners the difference between the O.P. and the Prompt side that it became a question of physician heal thyself.' He continues: 'I wasn't sure of the year Mille Le Garde [sic] sang that song. Probably '97. Rose Dering was the Aladdin. She was second boy. Ted Young was the Widow Twankey. By the way in the pantomime in which Marie Lloyd was principal girl and sang Ta Ra Ra Boom de Ay, Vesta Tilley was the principal Boy, but I cannot remember the name of the pantomime.' He would like to get hold of copies of 'The Stage' for the 1880s and 1890s, and hopes that they 'may meet sometime. it would give me great pleasure.' An autograph postscript reads: 'I always enjoy your books very much'. Carbon copy of MP's reply: 1p., 8vo. Creased and aged. 18 lines. He gives chapter and verse (names, dates, venues) concerning the points raised by CM, concluding 'I hope we meet before long'.…
