Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. ] 12mo (4 7/8 x 7 3/16 inches), paper wrappers/self-cover (??), 56 total pages, Fair to Good condition. Fragile item, seems complete in sewn binding, though front cover almost fully detached w/ a small bit held by the center stitch. Back cover stitching (seen easily in one of the photos) holding very well. Condition beyond the first leaf overall rather decent. The second leaf has page number (3} printed in the top margin. Last leaf (back cover?) has the page number (56) printed in the top margin as well as F I N I S printed beneath the last line of type. No pages missing and since 56 pages this would be the 1720 printing (??) and with 2 parts combined (??) - however I am rather only speculating on the basis of a little research. This 56-page item is housed in a (circa 1920s, 1930s or 1940s ??) hardback tri-fold in brick red cloth, and in a slim matching brick red hardback slipcase (12mo, 5 3/8 x 7 3/4 inches) that features gilt titling in a maroon leather panel on the end opposite the open end (that end being quite tanned though the gilt titling and maroon leather remain quite nice). Initials at the heel of spine beneath the titling that I would read as ITE. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 4th Edition. 4th Edition 1749. Fine. A really lovely copy recently rebound by Temple Bookbinders of Oxford in new half purple calf with matching cloth boards. 8vo. pp.76 + vi with frontispiece engraving of 3 ships of war at sea. The text block, including the frontispiece is in almost perfect condition, despite its age,and unmarked throughout, clean and bright. Ned Ward , who wrote under the pseudonym "Author of the London Spy" was a writer and publican of the King's Head near Gray's Inn who was popular as much for his wit and humour as well as his excellent ale.Although Ward had travelled to the West Indies as a young man, it is thought that he wrote this work based on observations of naval types in his inn. First published in 1707 in the year Sir Cloudesley Shovell and his fleet were wrecked off the Scillies with the loss of 2000 lives in what was the greatest naval disaster of the times, the book became very popular. Copies are rare. ESTC records only 6 copies of the 4th edition, 3 in the UK and 3 abroad.…

The first illustrated edition of this spirited character-led exploration of the ranks of the British army by prolific English satirist Edward 'Ned' Ward (1667-1731), a companion to his anatomization of the Navy. This was also the first reprint of the title for over 50 years, since its first appearance in 1709. Uncommon on the market, just a single copy of this edition appearing at auction. A pretty copy. The mordant frontispiece is an unsigned reissue of The Military Nurse, or Modern Officer, which was published separately by Carrington Bowles c.1750, with the credit "invented & engrav'd by R. Attwold" (BM 1854,0812.150). The rather fine original drawing is held by the British Museum, aptly described thus: "a sergeant approaching from the left, a halberd in his left hand and in his right, a pair of leading-strings with which he guides the youthful and spindle-legged officer who precedes him with a large Union flag, soldiers on the march indicated to left and right in the background". In his unpublished notes in the Department of Prints and Drawings, the keeper Edward Croft-Murray, remarked that Attwold, who is known for but a few drawings and plates, was "in his handling of red chalk (the medium of two BM drawings) certainly influenced by Hogarth, though Attwold's manner is less robust". Attwold addresses the perennial problem of the early modern army, the commissioning of wealthy but inexperienced young officers, the caption verses beginning, "By Dear Mama's Petition. And Good Papa's Purse, Jacky gets a Commission, And likewise a Nurse". ESTC T62092 Octavo in 4s. pp. [viii], 71, [1]. With an engraved frontispiece. Late 19th-century calf, black label, low bands with gilt rules to spine, single fillet gilt panel to the covers, foliate edge-roll,gilt. Very slightly rubbed, a couple of light scuffs; light browning, a couple of leaves with pale hygroscopic damping at the top corner; overall a very good copy.…
