Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition (published simultaneously in 1899 in the US by Eaton & Mains, New York). ***Author of "By Canoe and Dog-Train," "Three Boys in the Wild North Land," etc. ***Illustrated with eighteen black and white plates by J. E. Laughlin throughout including tissue-guarded frontispiece showing: 'The Battle With The Eagle' to illustrate page 109; 'Alec's Race with the Wolves (p. 52); Dog-travelling Under Auroral Lights (p. 71); 'The Bear Still Holding on to His Pig (p. 272). (All eighteen plates present, as called for). ***Very good in attractive green pictorial cloth-covered boards with black titles to spine and front board and brown and white and black illustrations to spine and front board. Light offsetting to front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Contemporaneous black fountain pen ink inscription to front free endpaper: 'Willliam Guy, a reward from the Wesleyan Sunday School Reepham, Oct. 1907.' Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Edges of text-block and prelims sporadically lightly foxed, not affecting interior pages. Spine tight. Boards bright. ***190mm x 128mm. 377 pages plus six-pages of publisher's adverts to rear. ***'While a wintry storm was raging outside, in the month of November, three happy, excited boys were gathered around the breakfast table in a cozy home in a far North Land. ***To those who have not read of the previous doings of these young lads we would say that our heroes were three noble boys from across the sea. They had come out the previous summer from Great Britain by the Hudson Bay Company' ship and had had several months of most delightful and exciting adventures in the wild North land. They were the guests of Mr. Ross, a retired official in the Hudson Bay Company, who, when his long term of active service in the fur trade had ended, had preferred remaining in the country than returning to any other land. During the many years he had traded with the Indians he had ever been on the most friendly terms with them. He had observed so many noble traits and characteristics in them that he and his family preferred spending the greater portion of each year surrounded by them. Then the quiet charm of such a life had more attraction and a greater fascination for them then the rush and worry and demands of our so-called highest civilization. ***Mrs. Ross was a Native Indian woman, but, like many other wives of Hudson Bay officials, was a highly educated woman.' (Quote from Chapter I). ***Egerton Ryerson Young (1840 - 1909) was a Canadian methodist cleric and author. Reverend Young and his wife were appointed to a large region of Northern Canada, and to be able to visit their flock they travelled mainly by canoe in the summer and by dog-train in the winter. ***First impression of the simultaneous true first edition, extremely hard to find complete in its original pictorial boards with all plates present, in such nice bright collectable condition. ***An uncommon title, of interest to collectors of rare antiquarian children's books and pictorial bindings, and those interested in nineteenth century life in the wild backwoods of Canada, and native Indians such as the Sioux and Chippewa Indians. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. J. E. Laughlin (illustratore).…

Their guide and mentor Mr. Ross, accompanies them in a one-year adventure in the "Wild North Lands" of the Hudson Bay Territory of modern day Canada. The group also travels with different hunting parties and native groups hailing from the Assiniboine, Red River, Cumberland, and Saskatchewan regions. Exposure to these different groups and environments teach the young men about everything from sailing, to hunting, fishing, and traveling. Sometimes the boys venture out into the wilds with only themselves and Mr. Ross, and have to be careful for threat of attack by bear or wolves. A page-turning adventure fraught with both merriment and peril. **Canadian AUTHOR Egerton Ryerson Young (1840 - 1909) was born in Crosby, Upper Canada, where he was raised by his step-mother. He became a teacher, but eventually grew dissatisfied with his work, leaving two years later to confront his lack of "spiritual progress." He then became a missionary to many of the natives of Rupert's Land, and wrote to showcase the beauty and value of Canada and its people. Originally he just wrote about his experience as a missionary in Canada, but eventually expanded outwards to telling more intriguing tales and wrote many fictitious adventures taking place there.
