See his entry, and that of Pettigrew, in the Oxford DNB. Easthope was a difficult employer, nicknamed 'Blast-hope'. Dickens worked for him as a parliamentary reporter between 1834 and 1836. 1p, 12mo, on recto of first leaf of a bifolium. In fair condition, aged and discoloured. Reads: 'My dear Pettigrew / Will you please to leav…e out Lancaster letter which I'll send for tomorrow / haste / Yrs. / J E / Sunday'. The letter is addressed on the reverse of the second leaf, with slight loss to one corner from the breaking of the red wax seal. Black 'BARNET' postmark and customary frank in red. Franked in the customary fashion: 'Barnet June five / 1831 / T. J Pettigrew Esqr / 8 Savile Row / London', with the signature at bottom left: 'Sir J Easthope'.

(1), 538 ff. 25 pp. 85 ff. Bound in uniform green half mororcco over marbled boards with giltstamped red label to gilt spine. An encompassing study of the… weapons of classical antiquity, commissioned by the Duc de Luynes and prepared by the great classical scholar Lepsius, who was to head the Prussian expedition to Egypt in 1842-45. The antiquary and numismatist Honoré d'Albert de Luynes (1802-67) was an important patron of scholarship and the arts. During his sojourn in Paris in the years 1833-35 Lepsius compiled this survey from the Greek and Latin sources to form the basis for an archaeological and philological work of the Duke's that did not materialize. - The hefty first volume, entitled "Arma Graecorum, Romanorum, gentiumque Barbarorum", contains a Greek repertorium with notes in French (f. 128r: "C'est donc une couverture de tous le bras, non pas seulement de la main ce qu'on serait porté à croire d'après l'explication de Pollux [.]"; f. 165r: "sur la fabrication des glaives"; ff. 262-264: extensive discussion of bows and archers), with an alphabetical index beginning on f. 515. A larger, slimmer volume is dedicated to Homer exclusively: Greek text and French notes in two columns with several illustrations, treating shields, helmets, armour, swords etc., also discussing the Durand collection ("Parmi les vases de Monsieur Durand il y a une amphore à fig., représentant le combat d'Hercule contre les Amazones [.]"), the armour of Agamemnon and of Alexander, the skin of the Nemean Lion, as worn by Hercules ("n'est devenue un vêtement de ce héros que depuis Pindare") etc. The octavo volume contains quotations from Greek writings (again with French notes) on helmets, armour, etc. ("Et en effet je crois qu'Homère lui même par ces différents noms d'armures [.] a voulu désigner différentes espèces qu'il semble aujourd'hui [.] je n'hésite nullement de croire que ces noms désignaient autrefois des espèces de casques"). - Bindings insignificantly rubbed; very occasional slight browning or edge flaws. An early 19th century Egyptologist's fascinating travel notes documenting his journey through the Nile valley, profusely illustrated with more than 230 sketches showing hieroglyphs and Greek and Coptic inscriptions. - At… the age of 27, Louis de Vaucelles undertook an expedition to Egypt to explore the banks of the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. He set out from Marseille on 27 January 1826 and reached the second cataract on 27 May. In his journal he accurately reproduces all cartouches and inscriptions of the temples, tombs and palaces visited up to the first cataract south of Aswan. He gives the condition of monuments (sometimes mere ruins), identifies traces of Christian chapels and churches, translates hieroglyphs dedicated both to pharaohs and Roman emperors, indicates (in cursive script) several Arabic words and names, and mentions the orientalists who preceded him: his mentor Champollion as well as Denon, Maillé, Belzoni, and Niebuhr. Among the temples and sites he describes are Ipsamboul, Edfu, Dakka ("un des mieux conservés"), Thèbes ("Louqsor"), Karnak, Denderah Assouan, Elephantine and Philae as well as the pyramids of Giza, Cleopatra's Needle, the Sphinx (the head of which is said to be "extrêmement mutilée"), Alexandria, and the Nile Delta. - The final fifty-odd pages are devoted to contemporary Egyptian cities, their people, and their Arab, Jewish and Coptic traditions. As Vaucelle notes, Coptic Christians are free to practice their religion due to the unrivalled tolerance of the Muslim faith ("tant il est vrai qu'il n'y a pas de religion plus tolérante que la religion mahométane"). He also provides details of medical operations such as castration, circumcision, and excision, as well as of the "Kalisch" festivities held in Cairo at the time of the opening of the dikes. - Louis de Vaucelles de Ravigny was trained by Jean-François Champollion, who in 1824 published his "Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens". Apart from the present travel journal he also produced a "Chronologie des monuments antiques de la Nubie" (1829), based on the interpretation of the royal legends contained in the hieroglyphic reliefs, a book in which he pays tribute to the German egyptologist François-Christian Gau. - Slight fraying to edges; wants wrappers' spine. Trust the translation, the letter is addressed to a 'Dear friend', and begins: 'My friend Graf [i.e. the antiqu…ities dealer Theodor von Graf] arrived yesterday from Venice and brought many most interesting antiquities - His visit prevented my writing to you - but then I hope to show you some of his treasures, next time we meet. He came early and stayed late. Today Winnels dines with us. (He is a Specialist M.D. for ladies, recently called to Munich) - and the publishers hurry me - but nevertheless I must send you a greeting and tell you - we are coming to town on Saturday.' The rest of the letter discusses travel plans, with reference to 'Paul and Hans' and 'the Exhibition'. Note: "Born in Engerda (present-day Germany) in 1840, Otto Theodor Graf became one of the most important Egyptian antiquities dealers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was among the earliest antiquarians to search for antiquities dating from the late Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. The owner of a carpet business in Vienna with a branch in Cairo, Graf counted major museums in Europe and America among his clientele, as well as individuals such as Sigmund Freud."[Exhibition Notes, "Buried Finds", at The Met].

An interesting item in the field of Victorian Egyptology. The subject is what Owen describes here as 'one of the oldest Statues of an Egyptian Notable in the British Museum'. Its current Museum Number is EA103, and it has been in the Museum since 1835, but the details of its acquisition are unclear. In his translation Birch call…s the sitter 'the Royal Scribe, Amenhelp', but the current BM description begins: 'Scribal statue of Amenhotep son of Hapu: of black grano-diorite. Hieroglyphic texts are inscribed on the papyrus unrolled on his lap and on the statue plinth. His right hand, now broken, held a pen, as if writing, while his left hand holds the papyrus roll. [.]' At the time of writing Owen and Birch were colleagues at the British Museum, Owen as Superintendent of the Natural History Department, and Birch as head the Egyptian and Assyrian branch (see the entries on both men in the Oxford DNB). The recipient of Owen's covering letter to Birch's translation is Lady Ann Cullum (1807-1875), widow of Sir Thomas Gery Cullum (1777-1855) of Hardwick House. As a palaeontologist, Owen opposed Darwin's theory of evolution with a biblical view of creation, and his interest in Ancient Egypt, bound up with his Christian beliefs, is apparent in the letter in an elegant assessment of the significance of the statue, and in his annotation of Birch's translation. The letter and translation are on four 4to pages of the same paper. In good condition, with light signs of age and wear. The letter is on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium, and the first page of the translation on the recto of the second leaf, but they have now been inverted by folding, with the two leaves carrying the other two pages of the translation tipped-in at the front, resulting in the material being presented in reverse order. ONE: Covering Autograph Letter Signed from Owen to Lady Cullum, with good firm signature, addressed from 'Sheen Lodge, Richmond Park, | 5th May 1867.' 1p, 4to. The letter reads: 'Dear Lady Cullum, | I have the pleasure to send, agreeably with my promise, a copy of the Translation of the hyeroglyphic [sic] Inscription on one of the oldest Statues of an Egyptian Notable in the British Museum. It affords a suggestive insight into a social position, of one of the earliest historical civilized & organized Communities. The date is probably anterior to that which may be assigned to the visit of Abram to Egypt. Gen. XII. | Retaining a lively recollection of the pleasure of the day spent at Hardwick, I remain, | Your Ladyship's very truly, | Richard Owen.' TWO: Manuscript translation described in Owen's letter. 3pp, 4to. Written out in an unknown hand, with the first of the five sections titled: 'Translation of the Inscription on the Garment and Papyrus which he is unrolling.' The other four sections of the translation are: 'Inscription In Front of the base', 'Running to the left of the figure', 'right Side' and 'Left side'. At the head of the first page, in Owen's autograph: 'Hyeroglyphics [sic] on the Statue of the Seated Royal Scribe "Amenhelp," in the British Museum.' On the third page, at the end of the translation and in the same unknown hand, is written out a 'Copy of letter from Samuel Birch, Esqre: F.S.A. &c. | Keeper of Antiquities in the British Museum, enclosing the above Translation to Professor Owen: -'. Birch's letter is dated from the British Museum, 9 July 1860. It reads: 'My dear Professor, | Enclosed is the Translation of the Inscriptions on the Granite Statue of the Seated Scribe. It Consists of the Dedication of the Statue to the Royal Scribe, Amenhelp, and of his prayers, to the God, Amen-Ra the Theban Jupiter. | Believe me, | Yours very truly | (signed) Samuel Birch'. The translation carries tem marginal annotations in Owen's autograph, indicating an interest in and knowledge of the subject. The two of Owen's annotations read: 'His territorial Title: Baron Shamer, like all the Nobility of Egypt, was a priest: the condition is now parallel'd at the Court of Rome.' and 'the Upper & Lower Provinces of Egypt paralleling the Heavens & the Earth.' For the recipient Thomas Joseph Pettigrew see the Oxford DNB. Pettigrew was personal physician and librarian to the Duke of Sussex, who had consulted Bree for asthma, and by whose advice Bree had removed in 1804 from Birmingham to Hanover Square in London. Having been a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since 1807, Bree…was chosen Harveian lecturer in 1827, publishing the course of lectures in the following year. Both items in good condition, lightly aged, each with a thin strip of paper from the mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf. ONE: 27 June 1827. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with seal in red wax, to 'T. J. Pettigrew Esqr | Saville [sic] Row'. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir | I am obliged by your kind Notes, and the Manner in which you have had the politeness to express yourself respecting the Oration. The College, I cannot doubt, wou'd have been gratified by the honor of his Royal Highnesses presence, but I merely acted upon my individual Sentiments respecting the Duke of Sussex, when I obeyd the duty I owed to truth, & the dignity of a Public Ceremony in offering a public testimony of opinion on his Royal Highnesses great Value to the whole world of letters & Science and liberal principles.' Pettigrew, in 'the office of being auxiliary to his Royal Highnesses important Objects', is, Bree considers, 'fortunate in a just estimation having been formed of your disposition & capacity to act upon vierws so entirely according with your feelings & judgement'. He concludes with reference to 'these few lines' of thanks. TWO: 6 February 1828. 1p, 12mo. On bifolium, with reverse of second leaf addressed, with seal in black wax, to ' Pettigrew Esqr | Saville Row'. He asks him 'to present to his Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex a Copy of the Harveian Oration in which I took the liberty of expressing my gratitude to and respect to his Royal for [sic] his protection of Letters and Science'. He is enclosing a copy of the lecture, 'which you will oblige me by accepting yourself'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

To an unidentified recipient about the scheduled unwrapping of the mummy of Pharaoh Me(r)nephta: "On déroule Ménephta demain à partir de 9 heures ou 9¼; ne l'oubliez pas [.]" (Cairo, 7 July 1907). - Merneptah was originally buried within tomb KV8 in the Valle…y of the Kings, but his mummy was not found there. In 1898 it was located along with eighteen other mummies in the mummy cache found in the tomb of Amenhotep II by Victor Loret. Merneptah's mummy was taken to Cairo and eventually unwrapped by Dr. G. Elliott Smith on July 8, 1907, who noted that "the body is that of an old man and is 1 meter 714 millimeters in height. Merneptah was almost completely bald, only a narrow fringe of white hair (now cut so close as to be seen only with difficulty) remaining on the temples and occiput. A few short (about 2 mill) black hairs were found on the upper lip and scattered, closely clipped hairs on the cheeks and chin. The general aspect of the face recalls that of Ramesses II, but the form of the cranium and the measurements of the face much more nearly agree with those of his [grand]father, Seti the Great". - Another letter to Madame Albert Robin about an invitation (22 October 1886), and another to the historian and archaeologist Paul Esdouhard d'Anisy about his admiration for the beauty of Roger van der Weyden's polyptychon "The Last Judgment" in Beaune (5 April 1916). - After the death of Auguste Mariette in 1881, Gaston Maspero succeeded him as head of the Egyptian Service d'Antiquités Égyptiennes and director of the Bulaq museum, today the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. In 1886 he resumed work begun by Mariette to uncover the Sphinx, removing more than 65 feet of sand and seeking tombs below it. He also introduced admission charges for Egyptian sites to the increasing number of tourists to pay for their upkeep and maintenance.
