This 1909 edition (25th impression) has fine binding with the red cloth cover featuring decorative pattern of roses in 2 colours, and titles on front and spine in gold. Cover is worn and bumped along edges, at corners, and at spine hinges. Binding intact. Attractive Ex Libris plate dated 1909 pasted inside front cover. Text (300 pp inc Appendix) very good. Written by the English poet and journalist who succeeded Alfred Tennyson as Poet Laureate in 1896, 'Lamia's Winter-Quarters' is an account of a sojourn in a Tuscan Villa above Florence, described in poetry and prose. Collated, complete with sixteen illustrated plates by the English artist and illustrator George Samuel Elgood, who was best known for his paintings of formal gardens. The copy also features head and tail pieces throughout the volume, taken from pen and ink drawings by William Scott. Some scuffing and wear to binding, slightly bumped corners. Binding quite firm. A few small tears to front inner hinge. Gilt upper page edges, with some scuffing, a little marking and dulling but still reasonably vivid. Deckled lower and fore-edges a little browned, scuffed and somewhat foxed but reasonably clean for age. Small postage stamp type label with initials to front pastedown and year written beneath. Alfred Austin's "The Garden That I Love", a tale of celebration of nature, gardens and gardening, was published in London by Adam and Charles Black in 1906 (a year after it's first release), and is a charming book from the Edwardian era - in excellent, clean preservation. This is a book that does present well. It is also a unique and very apt book, for it bears the personal bookplate of the legendary English gardener, author and broadcaster, Alan Titchmarsh (to the front pastedown), which is nice to see and certainly adds interest. Alfred Austin was an English poet (he became Poet Laureate in 1896) and his poetic and tender narrative of a year spent in a beloved garden is nicely supported by the 16 colour plates from George S. Elgood, each with captioned tissue guards. The book is very attractively preserved in its original binding of green cloth over boards with a grey and black border with gilt stamping on the cover, and top edge gilt. Aside from browning to the blank end-leaves, and light age-spotting along the closed fore-edge, the book is in very good condition - no inscriptions, and with the pages within clean and free from scuffing or markings. Soundly bound, the boards display just a touch of light age-related wear commensurate with its antiquarian status.
