Besonders Personen die nicht am Erwerbsprozess teilnehmen oder nicht in Ausbildung stehen, finden schwer Zugang zum Inter…net. Obwohl die Internetnutzung mit einem Wechsel der Altersgruppen steigen wird, nutzen hà her gebildete Menschen das Internet à fter und intensiver. Die digitale Kluft muss daher vor allem im Bildungsbereich bekämpft werden um Chancengleichheit zu ermà glichen. Besonders deutliche Effekte gibt es auch bezüglich des Erwerbsstatus der Befragten. Befragte, die nicht in Ausbildung sind, oder nicht am Erwerbsleben teilnehmen, haben eine signifikant geringere Wahrscheinlichkeit, Internetnutzer zu sein. Nicht einmal jeder zweite Arbeiter zählt zu den Internetnutzern während der Anteil bei Selbstständigen und Angestellten bereits rund 80% beträgt. Dieses Ergebnis bestätigt eindeutig das Konzept von Manuell Castells (2001), einem der wichtigsten zeitgenà ssischen Theoretiker auf diesem Gebiet: "Mit anderen Worten kommt es für den Internetzugang immer weniger auf das Alter als auf die Beziehung zur Arbeit an, weil das Internet zum unverzichtbaren professionellen Handwerkszeug wird." In weiterer Folge kann lebenslanges Lernen Gruppen niedriger Berufsschichten, in denen das Internet noch nicht zum Berufsalltag gehà rt, zu mehr Partizipation im Internet verhelfen. Aber auch die gegenwärtigen Nutzer weisen erhebliche Wissensdefizite auf, was teure Folgen haben kann, wenn es um Sicherheitsvorkehrungen geht. Während 80 Prozent der Nutzer die Richtigkeit der Aussage "Mit e-mail kann man auch Dateien verschicken" bestätigen, wird der Browser von der Hälfte der Befragten wortwà rtlich mit einer Dusche verwechselt. Weitere 37% der Befragten sind unsicher, ob nicht doch ein Browser den Computer von Viren reinigen kà nnte - nur jeder Zehnte Befragte beurteilt diese Aussage als falsch. Weitere 46% der Befragten sind unsicher, ob Cookies nicht doch zum Schutz der Privatsphäre im Internet dienen kà nnen. Die soziale Umgebung beeinflusst die Häufigkeit der Nutzung. Die Kà nner unter den Internetnutzern haben mehr Nutzer und damit potentielle Hilfeleister in ihrer Umgebung. Vor allem Kollegen springen oft als Helfer ein, wenn es Fragen im Zuge der Internetnutzung gibt. Entscheidend ist aber nicht nur die verfügbare Zahl an Helfern sondern auch die Qualität der Hilfe. Die Unterstützung kann dabei sowohl für Helfer als auch für den Hilfesuchenden zur Belastung werden. Qualitative Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass Personen die einen Partner haben der internetversiert ist, sich noch mehr in ihrem eigenen Nicht-Kà nnen bestätigt fühlen und sich deshalb seltener trauen um Hilfe zu bitten. Viel dieser Unterstützung und Hilfeleistungen passiert noch immer informell und unbezahlt. Das Buch zeigt diese und andere Defizite aber auch Ressourcen auf und diskutiert MaÃnahmen, wie der Digital Divide in Zukunft bekämpft werden kann.
