Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Good +. First UK Edition. First UK edition hardcover in navy blue paper covered boards with bright gold titles. Spine ends bumped, tips still sharp showing a touch of color loss only. Not a former library copy, there are some fingerprints and age-toning on endpapers, but no writing in the 155pp text. There are a few repaired closed tears at foot of some pages from turning and light foxing on page block. Spine crack but all pages holding tight. Un-clipped original, color illustrated dust wrapper has small 1/4" - 1/2" chips at spine ends, color loss flap folds, and along ends of both panels. Wrapper now in new mylar and displays well. A work of historical horse fiction. Three centuries before the story begins Hernan Cortes brought a beautiful Arabian stallion to Mexico. Somehow he escaped from the Spanish Conqueror, and thereafter his legend grew. Years later in the Rio Grande country men claimed to have seen the silver horse racing wild and free in the moonlight. The Lonely One, they called him, or the Silver Loneliness. No one could lay hand on him, but sometimes ranchers found silver foals running with their herds, although he never killed range stallions or stole their mares. His decendents all bore the distinctive marks of the great Arab strain. When the silver stallion died no one knew, for the border folk claimed to see him still. Chela, thirteen-year-old granddaughter of the good doctor Don Diego, first learned of the legend when she received a fiesta gift: a tiny silver statue of a winged horse, wrought with exquisite workmanship, springing from a base of carved ebony. Somehow the little figure embodied all the beauty, all the wild desire for freedom of the legendary stallion. From that moment he lived in her imagination. Would she ever see the Silver Loneliness, running as fleet as a hawk on the wing in the moonlight.

When ten year old Susannah arrives at Long Island's Montauk Point to live with her Uncle Buffalo Bill, a man whose pride and ill luck have kept him from returning to his beloved Texas, a mystery develops whose solution brings happiness for them both. Susannah and Dusty, an older boy, come to know and love a horse, the Blue Palomino. But there is also hermit-like Miss Jezebel who lives in an all but haunted house by the sea. As the youngsters get to know her they are told of her background: Virginia and a rich horse farm from whose line of steeplechasers the Palomino came. With the Palomino's winnings, which they come to merit, Susannah and Uncle Buffalo can realize their dream of buying their own ranch in Texas.
